A bad headache can completely ruin your day, and in many cases escalate stress levels significantly. It may not seem like a serious health concern but when you do have a splitting headache, you will find it difficult to concentrate while physical functions will also be negatively affected. Instead of turning to pharmaceutical pain relievers, try utilizing some natural home remedies for headaches.

Home Remedies for Headaches

If you’re someone who regularly experiences headaches, you may find it difficult to resist the grabbing for an over the counter pain reliever. Before becoming overly dependent on these pharmaceuticals, you should consider using natural solutions. These could successfully alleviate the pain without ingesting pharmaceutical drugs that can cause adverse side-effects. Here are some home remedies for headaches.

For the first and easiest solution, try increasing water consumption. This type of pain can be caused by constricted blood vessels which prevent proper blood circulation and results to throbbing and pain. Water can resolve dehydration and improve blood circulation. In addition to guzzling down water once you begin to feel a headache, increase overall water consumption on a daily basis.

Interestingly, peppermint oil can also help in reducing headache pains. The same effect can also be achieved by using lavender oil. It is the combination of the soothing scents and environment-feel that allows you to relax and eventually lose the intense pain. To achieve faster results, you can also rub or gently massage your head and the areas surrounding the painful area. The stimulation will allow better blood circulation as well.

If you have been experiencing chronic headaches for days, then it is time to recognize how fruit can make one of many great home remedies for headaches. Eating apples in the morning for at least a week can give you impressive positive results, while creating a paste out of freshly pounded lemon fruit can also be the perfect solution. The lemon paste should be applied on the painful area. If your headache is caused by sinusitis, grab a pot and boil some ginger. Inhaling the vapor could be enough to help. In addition to relieving pain from headaches, ginger has also been shown to be a cancer fighter.

The plant, called acmella oleracea, is just one more sound solution and alternative to risky pharmaceutical drugs pushed by western mainstream medical professionals.

Plant from the Amazon Utilized as a Painkilling Gel

Although acmella oleracea is hardly a plant most people would recognize, it has been used for centuries by Inca tribes as a pain reliever for toothaches and to help aid irritable bowel syndrome. The plant is so potent that it could even replace anaesthetic injections.

Coming across the plant over 30 years ago while living among a secretive Peruvian tribe, Cambridge University anthropologist Dr Francoise Barbira Freedman experienced the incredible healing properties of the plant when suffering from severe pain in her wisdom teeth. Upon taking the remedy offered by the tribe, the discomfort ‘went away immediately’. Years after her encounter with acmella oleracea, Freedman supplied Cambridge with a list of rainforest remedies, with acmella oleracea being added to the bottom of the list as an afterthought.

Researchers from Cambridge were more than pleased, and ended up using extracts from the plant to develop a gel which blocks the pain receptors in nerve endings. In formal trials, the plant helped to relieve pain during the removal of teeth which were impacted. Other informal tests done by a Peruvian dentist found that extract from acmella oleracea also helped to treat ulcers while also dampening pain caused by braces, tooth removal, gum disease, and dentures.

“This treatment for toothache means we could be looking at the end of some injections in the dentist’s surgery…We’ve had really clear results from tests so far, particularly for procedures such as scaling and polishing, and there are many other potential applications…We think people prefer to use natural products and this is particularly the case for baby teething, for which, to my knowledge, there is no clinically tested natural alternative.”

The release of a acmella oleracea product, which is expected to hit the market within 2 years, will enable consumers to choose yet another alternative for pain relief rather than indulging in death-linked pharmaceutical painkillers.

Often people are taught through various media outlets that life is to be lived with a ‘dog eat dog world’ philosophy. Struggling to survive in current times has given rise to a more apathetic and sometimes ruthless humanity. Of course these testing times are majority-wise not a result of the common man, but those at the top of the proverbial pyramid; the common man is the one that is most affected.

The Startling Disconnect of Humanity: How Corruption and Injustice Roam Free

Some individuals are satisfied with a ‘just getting by’ attitude — a severe lack of personal contribution based on their desire to make sure that they themselves are fully content. This is the individual who sits idle as atrocities are committed across the globe, saying “it can’t happen to me.” Many people may not be inherently bad, and they may not go out of their way to cause others loss or pain, but while not going out of their way to contribute something meaningful either. This ‘idle’ mindset allows for widespread corruption as there is not a large body of individuals ready to resist it.

“First they came…” is a famous saying that was attributed to pastor Martin Niemöller regarding the lack of action taken against the Nazis during the World War 2 era. The statement accurately sums up how a lack of action can result in mass corruption, pain, and even death.

The saying goes like this:

First they came for the communists,
and I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t a communist.

Then they came for the trade unionists,
and I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews,
and I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t a Jew.

Then they came for me
and there was no one left to speak out for me.

This in turn also means that people hardly ever lookout for their fellow man (or woman). As a result, people often find themselves without help when their own times of trouble come.

It’s important to recognize that life is something we all uniquely experience together. Without social classes or ideologies to guide us, we would find that most of the things we place value on in society are actually not important. Appearances, money, material things – energy wasted on empty pursuit in the form of expensive hobbies, entertainment, and especially meaningless endeavors governed by money.

Don’t be afraid to use your influence to make a difference in the lives of others. It means a lot more to help a person — or an entire population — with their life than it does to satisfy a more carnal desire. These kinds of decisions are often overlooked in the hustle of daily life, though they are some of the most important we can ever make. In a world where love is increasingly being taken out from interaction, life can become impersonal and cold. This won’t be the case, however if you have a wish for preservation.

It’s no crutch or weakness to rely on other people, but many people are unreliable because of their desire to help only themselves. Where does the solution start? With you. Your actions can prove to be a positive influence on others to the point where they will begin to do the same. It all starts with an injection of positive energy.
Receiving a massive can be the perfect treatment to lift the great proverbial weight off your shoulders and make way for an easier day. While these are important reasons to receive a massage, scientists have found that a massage reduces inflammation at the molecular level, causing it to reduce pain similar to painkilling drugs. The best part? It isn’t a drug.

Massage Shown to Reduce Inflammation at Molecular Level, Mimics Pain Killing Drugs

Lead researcher Dr. Mark Tarnapolsky and his team from the Department of Pediatrics and Medicine at McMaster University in Canada conducted a genetic analysis of muscle tissue samples from individuals who beforehand worked out hard on exercise bikes. The scientists took cell and tissue samples from both legs prior to exercise, immediately after a 10 minute massage on one leg, and after a two and a half hour recovery time period.

What the scientist found was that the massage dampened the effect of molecules which contribute to inflammation called cytokines while at the same time promoting the growth of mitochondria.

According to DailyMail, Tarnopolsky stated:

“The potential benefits of massage could be useful to a broad spectrum of individuals including the elderly, those suffering from musculoskeletal injuries and patients with chronic inflammatory disease…This study provides evidence that manipulative therapies, such as massage, may be justifiable in medical practice.”

There is no doubt that massage can have a powerful effect on the body. It can be utilized to alleviate pain, enhance immunity by stimulating lymph flow, or lessen depression and anxiety. One study has even found that a two minute ear or hand massage administered everyday can cause smokers to light up less. No matter what you use massage for, you are bound to be pleased by the results.

Generally it is not known how to effectively approach neck pain, which affects nearly 70% of people at some point in their lives. So pain medications like aspirin, ibuprofen, or narcotics are often turned to instead. But there are much better and safer solutions available than harmful pain medications – chiropractic care and physical therapy.

Chiropractic and Physical Therapy Better Than Drugs at Relieving Neck Pain

A study was recently conducted comparing various treatments for neck pain, which many doctors for some reason believe has no treatment. The researchers gathered 272 participants for the study, where each individual had neck pain with no particular cause. The single group was then divided into 3 groups, and each group was followed for 3 months.

Two of the groups followed a similar protocol, while one deviated from the others. To treat the neck pain, one group received chiropractic care 15 times for 20-minute sessions over the course of the 3 months. Another group met with physical therapists twice, where the group participants were asked to perform simple, gentle exercises for the neck in their own homes. Lastly, the remaining group was assigned to take some type of pain reliever, whether it be an acetaminophen-based drug or a stronger drugs like narcotics and muscle relaxants.

Over the course of the study trial, both groups not taking the drugs showed significantly better improvements than the group taking the drugs. In this particular study, only 33 percent of the people reported a 75 percent reduction in pain stemming from medication use. About 57 percent of those receiving chiropractic care and 48 percent of those who met with physical therapists, however, reported the same 75 percent reduction in pain. Even after checking back with the patients a year later, the natural approaches were still reported to have a more positive and lasting impact than ingesting medications.

Of course those taking the medications had to continue taking them regularly for any relief. By taking and subscribing to these medications on a regular basis you are disempowering yourself, making it so you play no active role in your own care. Many individuals think powerful pain medication is the only option, but other solutions such as meditation have the power to beat morphine in relieving pain.

Needless to say, even low doses of common pain medications can lead to a multitude of health problems, including drug dependencies.

While chronic back pain is often thought of as a negative side-effect of getting older, the “naturally occurring” symptom is actually completely preventable. While these methods are often utilized for different reasons, two techniques have proven to be fabulous in treating back pain for years — yoga and stretching.

Yoga and Stretching | Viable Solutions for Chronic Back Pain

A recent study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine has given those practicing yoga even more reason to voice the pain-relieving benefits of yoga. Researchers who performed the study compared the end result of three different groups of participants – 92 who took weekly yoga classes, 94 who took weekly stretching classes, and 45 who utilized exercise and lifestyle strategies from a “self-care” book. The researchers found what many might have expected; those taking the yoga and stretching classes received much more benefit than those using the book. Needless to say, the book is at a potential disadvantage since the activities are likely not performed in a group setting and more self-discipline is needed.

Karen Sherman, Ph.D and one of the study’s authors says:

“Persons with chronic low back pain who attended a series of yoga or stretching [classes] had equivalent and clinically important improvements in their back-related dysfunction and symptoms that lasted for at least 14 weeks after the end of the study”

Of course there are many different specific conditions which can result in chronic back pain, many of which can still be targeted with the use of yoga. People who suffer from a herniated disc may feel pain relief by implementing yoga techniques which extend the back by bending backward. Similarly, a spinal stenosis can be helped by emphasizing flexion, or bending forward.

The easiest way to avoid chronic back pain and other back-related complications is undoubtedly to live a healthy lifestyle. Exercising regularly with an emphasis on the midsection of the body is great way to keep your muscles strong. Always shy away from a sedentary lifestyle, as that can ultimately be one of the main contributors to virtually all health complications.

Massage therapy may provide more relief for patients with chronic low back pain than thought — at least in the short term — according to a new study in the Annals of Internal Medicine.

Researchers affiliated with the Seattle-based Group Health Research Institute divided a total of 401 chronic low back pain patients into three groups. One of the groups served as a control group, with no changes in care, while those in the other two groups received either relaxation massage or structural massage.

After 10 weeks of therapy, one in three patients receiving either type of massage said their back pain was reduced, while only one in 25 of those on standard care reported the same relief. Massage patients also reported improved physical function, fewer days in bed, more activity and decreased use of anti-inflammatory medications.

“This seems to offer clinicians another option for managing a challenging group of patients,” said study coauthor Dr. Richard Deyo, professor of evidence-based family medicine at Oregon Health and Science University in Portland. “Some patients are eager to avoid medications, injections, or surgery, and this may offer some relief.”

Whether the reported benefits actually point to a therapeutic benefit to massage — or are simply an example of the placebo effect — has yet to be determined. And while the benefits of massage therapy appeared to last up to six months after the beginning of treatment, they tended to dissipate after a year.

Doctors pointed to this latter finding as evidence that the benefits of massage for low back pain were, at best, transitory.

“The data does not fit with most of what is known about low back pain,” said Dr. Donlin Long, professor of neurosurgery at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Md. “We have data from nearly 2,000 patients collected in a nationwide study which showed no lasting benefit with any [physical therapy], manipulation, and massage… I’ve used massage for years and what is does is relieve muscle pain while the patient improves spontaneously, but only in a well-chosen few.”

Part of the problem may be that while massage addresses muscular issues, many cases of chronic low back pain involve skeletal and nerve problems as well.

“It is difficult to conceive that massage therapy would have long term benefit,” said Dr. Gunnar Andersson, an orthopedic surgeon at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Medical Center in Chicago. “More likely the benefit is one of short term decrease in pain and associated increase in function.”

Still, for those affected by low back pain — the second most common neurological ailment in the United States and the most common cause of job-related disability, according to the National Institutes of Health — even the temporary benefits of massage may be time and money well spent. This is particularly the case, Andersson said, if the relief from massage reduces the amount of painkillers a patient must take.

“If you can achieve a decrease in the use of medication by providing massage therapy, then I’m all in favor of that,” Andersson said. “A number of patients with chronic back pain today are in my opinion over-medicalized and are taking a large number of medications, some of which are narcotic and some of which have significant side effects and costs.”
