Following the release of a peer-reviewed piece of research linking the consumption of Monsanto’s Roundup-containing GMO crops to tumors and organ damage, the French government is now calling for a health agency investigation. Seeking to analyze the research and potentially ask European authorities to protect human health and abandon the use of GMO crops, France’s Agriculture Minister and others are now sounding the alarm.

The study was the first to ever examine the true effects of lifelong GMO consumption in rats, and was dubbed ”the most thorough research ever published into the health effects of GM food crops and the herbicide Roundup on rats.” Finding an onset of mass tumors and damage to the kidneys and liver, the study has serious implications as to what large-scale GMO consumption is doing to humans. Since a serious lack of serious information has surfaced on the long-term effects of GMO consumption, human consumption of GMOs itself is really a mad scientist experiment on a global scale.

It appears French officials understand the severity of the findings, with Agriculture Minister Stephane Le Foll and others now asking the National Agency for Health Safety to investigate further. Both Le Foll and Social Affairs Minister Marisol Touraine described the decision in a joint statement:

“Depending on ANSES’ opinion, the government will urge the European authorities to take all necessary measures to protect human and animal health,” they said.

The duo went on to highlight how the decision could go as far as generating an emergency suspension of Monsanto’s modified corn known as NK603 (maize) throughout Europe:

“(The measures) could go as far as invoking emergency suspension of imports of NK603 corn to Europe pending a re-examination of this product on the basis of enhanced assessment methods.”

France just days ago decided to maintain a ban on Monsanto’s GMO MON810 maize despite massive political pressure. The country has been at the forefront in the fight against Monsanto as other nations either fold or directly empower Monsanto’s genetic crusade. Wikileaks cables revealed back in 2007, for example, that Monsanto controls most if not all US diplomats and other key players that are set to increase Monsanto’s grasp on the world’s agricultural industry.

whatever happened to the precautionary principle? Why does the public have to “proof” there is harm to the corporations? Shouldn’t it be the other way around? And why this incessant fight against labeling if there is nothing to worry about?

  • theoldman

Aside from all the other problems with this study, doesn't anyone find it a little fishy that they claim both the Roundup resistant corn AND Roudnup itself produce the same kinds of tumors in the same frequency ? The protein changes in the corn that make it Roundup resistant are chemically vastly different than Roundup itself.

  • theoldman

The only people who said this was a thorough research project were the conducting, "scientists",themselves who made reporters sign an agreement not to check it out with independent scientists before the release of the study.

And, where is it said that this was peer reviewed other than here?

Since all the groups of rats had some cancer, perhaps it was due to their exposure to poorly done French science.

  • KT

Actually, the GMO crops are bred to be roundup resistant so the resulting plant contains a lot of roundup in the plant tissue after spraying.

It's good to be informed, but it is also good to be an skeptic objective viewer. What happens especially online that people who already believe certain things are going to look for things online to support their beliefs even more. Personally I highly doubt GMO foods present any real health risk, so I am not going to be one of those people whipped up into a frenzy about this. Truth is organic farmers will never even come close to feeling the world with their highly inefficient practices. If you are going to pay a premium for so-called natural foods, you are likely living a healthier lifestyle in otehr aspects of your life and that is likely where the health benefits come from. I take statistics with a grain of salt anyways, you can make them say almost anything you want them to.

can someone please tell me, who is looking after the short and long term health of our peoples. I once trusted the foods I could buy from my shelves. Now I have to question each and every toxic substance I am basically forced to eat, drink, shower in, clean my house. This list of concern grows each and everyday. What is the good of this technology when you are dead. Sadly our children do not know what we are putting in their mouths. We need politicians world wide that are not affected by the all mighty dollar….chemical companies (hmmmmmmm)

I despise vivisection and can't believe in this supposed CIVILIZED CENTURY it's still being done. Why does science keep perpetuating the myth that animal studies are at all necessary and aren't incredibly cruel? Isn't there any humans that would volunteer to be fed these GMO foods for these studies? When will these Nazi scientists stop torturing animals?

Poison like Monsanto GMO pesticides will kill any living being but that isn't the point. Any REAL scientist would experiment on themselves, not these poor laboratory rats, mice, dogs, cats, primates and guinea pigs.

great comment, have you thought as to the reasons humans are suffering more and more cancers and ill health. GM foods are being used as we talk. We are the experiment.

Great news, France is taking some serious action on this front.

  • JP

The crops do not "contain" round-up, farmers spray on roundup after.

      Roundup-ready seeds.

Haven't read the publication yet, but there is an important distinction between GM food crops and herbicides/pesticides: "health effects of GM food crops and the herbicide Roundup…" My bet is that the herbicide is the culprit…
