A sedentary lifestyle is actually so detrimental to your health that it could be viewed as one of the almighty health-destroyers. Coupled with high stress levels, a lifestyle full of inactivity is a great way to hasten the process of declining health, ultimately leading to an early death. In our current society, physical labor has been overtaken by predominantly intellectual tasks. This new lifestyle, however, may be drastically increasing your risk for adverse health risks.
How Sitting is Negatively Impacting Your Health and Happiness
Research from the American College of Cardiology has previously shown that sitting can be as deadly as smoking. When sitting for long periods of time, the body goes into something known as ‘storage mode’. While in this mode, the body stops working as effectively as it should. This is the primary reason that prolonged sitting has been linked to a number of conditions including heart disease, obesity, diabetes, cancer, and even early death. Dr. David Coven, a cardiologist following the numerous studies released on the subject of prolonged sitting explains:
“Smoking certainly is a major cardiovascular risk factor and sitting can be equivalent in many cases…The fact of being sedentary causes factors to happen in the body that are very detrimental”
In addition, researchers from the University of Missouri have shown that sitting for long periods of time also increases your risk of diabetes, obesity, and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. The researchers noted that going from highly active (taking more than 10,000 steps a day) to inactive (taking less than 5,000 steps per day) is enough to increase your risk of type 2 diabetes. This is just one reason to partake in the simplest exercise there is – walking. Walking can have profound benefits on your health, acting as a fantastic exercise for both weight control and mindful relaxation.
Lastly, sitting strikes 92,00 per year with avoidable cancer. In fact, the reason for the cancer cases is due to the simplicity of sitting and it’s lack of movement. The report found that inactivity is a huge contributor to various types of cancers such as colon cancer and breast cancer, with 43,000 cases of colon cancer and 49,000 cases of breast cancer caused each year.
Do not be the one to participate in the all too common sedentary American lifestyle, which also acts as a formula to breed depression.

well im in hight schooler as well and i was just wondering the same thing about Americans life why Americans have such an unhealthy life style. It's the fact that there is so many family in the US that have TV and Computer in their house. American barely like to go out and play outside A lot of American family love watching TV and a lot of house have computer in their house.. The most awful thing about America is that there is a lot of unhealthy food I personnaly think wheover does the food, should stop putting chemical in the foods because it's obviously really bad for people specially kids nowadays. American really think that life withouth computer is a big deal but its really not for example leaving in Africa, Even though my family had TV in the house we barely use them because we go outside, try to meet the neighborhood and playy with them and Our food dont have chemical in it its normal.. im Just saying thoigh because i lived in Africa for 14 years and i've only live in the US for 2 years and i realize a lot of bad stuff about American life style.
I agree and this is paramount to modern work and career. That said, I make sure to lead an active fitness lifestyle by being a soft weekend warrior with a 2K run.
