Water fluoridation is a highly controversial topic, with many individuals voicing massive concern over the practice. In contrast, some stick to the concept that there isn’t any association between fluoride and any real negative effects. Fluoride, however, is indeed a toxic substance, and has been tied with numerous health complications in well-established research. Fluoride can be found in many water supplies, toothpaste, and even food at alarming levels. While it may sound shocking to many, some research is even drawing a close connection between fluoride and an increased cancer risk.

The Dangers of Fluroide

One paper entitled Fluoride – A Modern Toxic Waste says the following:

Yiamouyiannis documents research showing that fluoride increases the tumor growth rate by 25% at only 1 ppm, produces melanotic tumors, transforms normal cells into cancer cells and increases the carcinogenesis of other chemicals.  For the original references to these studies, refer to Yiamouyiannis’ pamphlet, Lifesavers Guide to Fluoridation.

In 1977, it was shown that fluoridation caused about 10,000 cancer deaths in epidemiological studies by Dr. Dean Burk, former head of the Cytochemistry Section at the National Cancer Institute and Yiamouyiannis. Despite the findings occurring in 1977, they were not reluctantly released until 1989. After analyzing the study results in rats, it was found that animals who drank fluoridated water:

  • Showed an increase in tumors and cancers in oral squamous cells.
  • Developed a rare form of bone cancer called osteosarcoma.
  • Showed an increased in thyroid follicular cell tumors.
  • Developed a rare form of liver cancer known as hepatocholangiocarcinoma.

Other research resurfaced by Dr. Dean Burk, former chief of cytochemistry at the National Cancer Institute for 30 years, also shows that fluoride increases the cancer death rate. Dr Burk refers to a study conducted which compares the 10 largest U.S. cities with fluoridation and the 10 largest without. What researchers found was that following fluoridation, deaths from cancer went up immediately- in as little as a year.

To reduce fluoride levels to a the greatest degree, activists must demand that the government stop fluoridating the water supplies. Water fluoridation has not only been linked to an increased cancer risk, but a decreased IQ in children. In fact, the findings forced the government to call for lower fluoridation levels nationwide. Until water fluoridation comes to a halt, the easiest way to reduce fluoride exposure is to invest in a reverse osmosis water filtration system. Drinking distilled water for 3-6 months may also reduce the soft tissue fluoride levels, but not bone levels. Soft tissue fluoride levels cause the greatest health problems.

As it may be good for your teeth, that isnt what were talking about. We are talking about the safety of it when consumed.

  • Dr S.

I really hope that all of you are joking…I’ve been a practicing oral surgeon for 15 years, and prior to that I was a General Practitioner for 5. Me and almost all of my colleagues have noticed a significant difference in the strength of the tooth enamel from kids who live in Windsor (My town which still activly fluorises water) and Leamington (A community which has banned fluorisation). That being said, I know dentists who love practicing in Leamington, because they’ve been filling a heck of a lot more cavities in the teeth poor Mexican laborers & their kids (people who most likely don’t have access to basic oral hygeine supplies)!

Water fluoridation indeed a controversial topic and thanks for specifying that topic more nicely. Clean water for drinking is very crucial issues nowadays. Peoples are using various ways to purify water for drinking and some of those ways are leading to deadly ending of human lives. I hope by reading this post they'll be aware and try to to use solid water purifying ways. Thanks.

You would think in today's technically advanced medical world that we could put an end to all the controversy surrounding fluoride and it's health risk. Until we have conclusive evidence either way that fluoride is healthy or unhealthy, unfortunately this debate will never end. I know fluoride has been used for years and I'm a firm believer in moderation. Anything in high doses or extreme amounts is usually toxic. On the flip side, if it's not offering hugely noticeable benefits, then why use it? Maybe one day we will find the answer?

The evidence is clear, so why doesn't anyone do anything about it? Has greed and power blinded officials so much that they couldn't care less how safe the public water supply is?

10 Facts about Water Fluoridation Everyone Should Know

Bottle-fed infants receive the highest doses of fluoride as they rely solely on liquids for food, combined with their small size. A baby being fed formula receives approximately 175 times more fluoride than a breast-fed infant

There is not a single process in your body that requires fluoride

A multi-million dollar U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) -funded study found no relation between tooth decay and the amount of fluoride ingested by children

Water fluoridation cannot prevent the oral health crises that results from inadequate nutrition and lack of access to dental care

Water fluoridation is a violation of your individual right to informed consent to medication

Forty-one percent of all American children aged 12-15 are now impacted by dental fluorosis (damage to the enamel).

The chemicals used to fluoridate water supplies are largely hazardous by-products of the fertilizer industry and have never been required to undergo randomized clinical trials for safety or effectiveness by any regulatory agency in the world

The U.S. FDA classifies fluoride as an "unapproved drug"

Ingesting fluoride has been found to damage soft tissues (brain, kidneys, and endocrine system), as well as teeth (dental fluorosis) and bones (skeletal fluorosis). There are also 24 studies demonstrating a strong relationship between fairly modest exposure to fluoride and reduced IQ in children

Fluoridation discriminates against those with low incomes. People on low incomes are least able to afford avoidance measures, such as reverse osmosis filters or bottled water

"In 1997, it was shown that fluoridation caused about 10,000 cancer deaths in epidemiological …

Despite the findings occurring in 1997, they were not reluctantly released until 1989."

Shouldn't that first and second date be 1977… I believe that's when the study was completed!

Otherwise, how can the info be released B4 it was known (1989)?

Somehow, someway, it will get into your system, Beer, soda, coffee, etc. all the manufactures add water to the drinks but were does the water they add come from?

  • BlueyBlogger

10,000 deaths? Is that all? Well, I do declare that's a trifling amount, considering the people who originally put the fluoride in our drinking and cooking water actually put it there to kill many more.

Give it time, as I'm certain the dumbed down people of USA either don't give a hoot, or, they do but have not the balls to do something about it….right?

One year ago, the City of Fairbanks, Alaska stopped fluoridation after 60 years. Learn how it was done here:

Politicians do not care about anything other than their pocket book. They don't care that you are dying from the fluoride, from all the other chemicals in food and environment which should not be there. They care so little about human life that they lie in order to bomb foreign countries too. They will be found out. he who searches hearts and minds will repay. Vengeance is Mine says the Lord.

    • Kay Lang

It goes beyond politicians. It is big corporations (too big to fail) that own us and own too many politicians. They are filled with greed. Nothing matters but profits. When a candidate asks for our support, we should reply: "Will you do something about the big corporations that have taken over our country? Do you know that the FDA is in bed with the biggest ones?"

  • Patricia Arline Murp

Here is my question. Has Florided been investigated in so far as the amost epidemic rate of Autism in America? Most of the kids in the generation involved have been raised with this poison added to their water supply. Seems to me there could very well be some correlation.

"Fluoride appears to have the potential to initiate or promote cancers, particularly of the bone…," according to the most recent and extensive review of fluoride toxicology by the prestigious National Research Council (2006)

Bassin et al. (2006) reported in Cancer Causes and Control that fluoride exposure is linked to an increased risk of osteosarcoma in boys and young men.

In 1990 the National Toxicology Program (NTP) reported an increase in osteosarcoma in male rats exposed to fluoride, an increased risk for liver and oral cancers, and an increase in thyroid follicular cell tumors.

Among human studies, Hoover et al. (1991) found a 79% increase in osteosarcoma in males under 20 years old in fluoridated counties, compared to a 4% decrease in non-fluoridated counties over time.

Cohn (1992) similarly reported an increased risk for osteosarcoma in males under age 20 living in fluoridated versus non-fluoridated counties.

Also, the NRC recommends further research be conducted on the effects of fluoride on the risk of bladder cancer.

In addition, the most commonly used fluoridation chemicals (silicofluorides) have been linked with increased levels of lead in children's blood. EPA considers lead to be a probable human carcinogen

Ramesh and colleagues propose that high fluoride bone content might have been one of the major factors causing osteosarcoma in people living in India where water supplies are often high in natural fluoride (J Env Pathology, Toxicology and Oncology, 2001)

In 6/2001 "Journal of Epidemiology," Takahashi et al. write, "The likelihood of fluoride acting as

a genetic cause of cancer requires consideration."

Biological Trace Element Research (4/2009)reports blood fluoride levels were significantly higher in osteosarcoma patients than in control groups
