In a move to avoid being slapped with a cancer warning label, Coca-Cola is making an emergency recipe alteration that involves removing a known carcinogen from the mix. Showing that the company is more interested in preserving sales than actually ridding its products of known cancer-causing substances, the company chose to remove the toxic ingredient to avoid the warning label — not to actively protect the health of the consumer. The compound (used for the drinks’ caramel coloring), known as 4-methylimidazole (4-MI or 4-MEI), has been ousted by the Center for Sciences in the Public Interest as a powerful carcinogen.

In fact, the Coca-Cola company even denied the cancer link, stating that the findings by CSPI and others were simply untrue. Calling the warning label ‘scientifically unfounded’, Coca-Cola says that there is no public health risk that justifies any change.

“While we believe that there is no public health risk that justifies any such change, we did ask our caramel suppliers to take this step so that our products would not be subject to the requirement of a scientifically unfounded warning,” Coca-Cola representative Diana Garza-Ciarlante told the Associated Press news agency.

As you may know, this coloring compound is not the only dangerous chemical contained in Coca-Cola products. Coca-Cola also contains high-fructose corn syrup, which is devastating the health of children and adults alike. It has also been reported that high-fructose corn syrup oftentimes contains mercury, which has resulted in many scientific organizations calling for immediate FDA action. One such organization, The Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy, is particularly concerned over the effect that the increased mercury exposure may have on children, such as the children who are actively consuming sodas containing high-fructose corn syrup.

“Mercury is toxic in all its forms. Given how much high-fructose corn syrup is consumed by children, it could be a significant additional source of mercury never before considered,” said Dr. David Wallinga, from The Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy.

Diet Coke also contains aspartame, an artificial sweetener that has been shown to spawn tumors in rats the size of golf balls. In a study in which rats were given the sugar substitute, 67 percent of all female rats developed tumors roughly the size of golf balls or larger. In the 2 and a health year study, researcher Innes-Brown used a dose of aspartame equivalent to that of 14 cans of diet — a number considered ‘reasonable’ by the FDA (a 50mg per kilogram ratio).

Coca-Cola apparently sees no cause for concern regarding the excessive amounts of aspartame consumed by individuals who drink diet soda on a daily basis, just as they see no cause for removing cancer-linked 4-methylimidazole. Does public health come second to ensuring the stability of profits for the Coca-Cola company?

Lot's of informed, awake people in this comment section ! How I got to this page is my husband, who drinks Coke all day long for years, has been diagnosed with tonsil and lymph node cancer a couple days ago…so I was doing a search of the ingredients in his favorite drink. I want to thank all of the commenters on their knowledge of this search ! ☼

Does anyone seriously drinking this??? No mater what they removed or added, I simply refuse to consume this @#&. It contains so much sugar – millions of diabetics should say "Thanks" to this drink.

Hey, are you know that Coca-Cola is too harmful for our body. but we are don't care about this. i think all of the people should be give up the this fizzy drinks. this is a totally Jung food. it damage our teeth, skin and many more. by the way, if you want to buy soy products with cheap rates so just check out our best soy sauce.

Your body is a chemical processor. As such it converts different chemicals into energy. Your body does not know the difference between high fructose corn syrup, sucrose, or fructose. It sees them all essentially the same. It is total malarkey to think otherwise.

Incorrect. Your statement itself is the true malarkey. Fruits in nature have a balanced mixture of different sugars which do not cause as bad of insulin spikes and other health problems. Concentrated fructose is toxic to the body. It must be processed by the liver and sits in the liver because it is TOXIC. Eating an apple, you get Vitamin C, copper, and a whole host of vital nutrients which dilute the sugars and aid in metabolism. Your statements were merely the unthinking regurgitation of the baseless, unscientific propaganda put out in TV ads by the corn/HFCS industry to make their "corn sugar" appear the same as real sugars.

I was a Coca Cola fanatic for years, but I have stopped drinking it. When Coca Cola removes the GMO from all of their products, I will start buying again, moderately. Until that time comes, it's organic sodas and homemade sweet tea.

I don't need "scientific proof" to know that chemicals are not good for the body, just like I don't need "scientific proof" to tell me not to ingest drano. It's called common sense.

  • LynnD.

Michael J. Fox is addicted to Diet Pepsi and has been for a long time. Nuff said.

  • Kat

You people who are for this, you guys are sickening. These things should be in our food or drinks. It is killing you. But if I came at you with a knife, you'd be running away and screaming. There is no difference. You make no sense, and its shameful. My god, wake the hell up.

    • Kat

      *shouldnt. Sorry for the error.

Come at me with a knife and you'll end up stuck and cut. Do t make assumptions about people you don't know.

  • Doglover

I love soda with all the crap in it. I have a right to drink whatever I want. Stop stepping on my rights! It's not the company's fault. If you don't want it then don't drink it!

    • Anonymous

Cery nice attitude like an ostrich! If I dont see it it wont sse me!

  • Porkchop

I have to say that quitting all soda drinks containing high fructose corn syrup probably is beneficial to your health. I try to drink juices now or mineral water in glass bottles like the Mexican brand Mineraagua bottled under the Jarritos brand. I can tell in the afternoons when I feel a little run down from working, a bottle peps me right up. Beware of grocery store shopping, a lot of things on the shelf appear to be healthy but aren't. Like juice cocktails usually contain high fructose corn syrup. Another thing to be aware of is the content of aspertame in yogurt, usually found in the "light" yogurt and not the regular. They are also starting to use the label "Neotame". Another thing I look for are foods that do not contain soybean oil. It's in everything now and soy beans are also a GMO crop.

  • BeeTee

The FDA is the liability protector for corporations. On Coca Colas website, their response to concerns over aspartame state that it is legal and approved by the FDA, which means it is safe. They also state that moderation is important. They know that most people do not drink a moderate amount of soda if they drink soda, but they protect themselves by ignoring what consumers are actually doing with their product by promoting moderation. They have basically the same statement regarding BPA used in the lining of their cans – it's legal and approved by the FDA, therefore it is safe. They ignore the EPA's list of susptected toxins that cause neurological damage and developmental disorders. The EPA list includes both BPA and aspartame.

  • Jericho

But I LOVE Aspartame. Im so addicted to it.

    • Anonymous

      Natural selection at work.

    • BeeTee

I was addicted as well. It has been 8 days since I had any aspartame and the results so far have convinced me aspartame is toxic. I have a long list of health and neuro issues that have plagued me for years, that were gone within 3 days of abstaining from aspartame. The results have been amazing and convinced me never to touch the stuff again. Before experiencing it for myself, I was a true skeptic of people who made the same claims I am right now. Now I know they were right and I wish I had listened ten years ago before my issues became chronic and unbearable.

The question that should be upper most in the minds of peoples is how and why have these companies and the FDA been allowed to get away with not only the poisoning of humans, but the earth itself?

How come former and current President's who happen to be the Commander and Chief of our armed forces not order the immediate arrest of Michael Taylor, former VP of Monsanto and currently the head of the FDA and Donald Rumsfeld for lifting the ban of Aspartame during the Reagan administration and being paid 12 millions as a bonus when Searle sold out to Monsanto of which Donald Rumsfeld had been the CEO of Searle, the manufacturer of Aspartame?

Why aren't our own political and security members of our country better protecting the processes that appear to norm and not the exception regarding the Constitutional rights of All of the people, ALL of the time?

How can this level of greed continue to be tolerated and or allowed without JUSTICE achieved?

It appears that We the people are nothing more then a human commodity exchange much like the stock market exchange to be used up generationally speaking to feed the greed need of the many participants in our own country and across the planet who appear to have achieved a "Free Pass" to contnue their "CRIMES AGAINST HUMANITY".

    • BeeTee

Ginger, have you read Woodrow Monte's book yet? It was just released in December. Included is mention of the 1978 internal FDA memo written by Dr. Collins which was not included in the original master file submitted to the Supreme Court when the approval of aspartame was challenged. I read the actual memo in it's entirety and it made me sick. Not including it in the master file submission was complete intentional fraud. There is no way the Supreme Court would have allowed aspartame to be approved had the memo and the referencing studies been included. You need to read the memo.

  • yankee phil

Dr. Atkins warned of problems with aspartame also in relation to diabetes, he warned of many dangerous side effects that the chemical companies were trying to deny and suppress. A couple of months later he dies from a hit and run car accident while he's crossing the street in the middle of the day and although someone got the plate of the car, it didn't help find the driver. Does anyone know which company held the patent on aspartame back then?

    • BeeTee

That is not how Dr. Atkins died, but it's better than the rumor that he died of a heart attack.

      • BeeTee

Also, the patent for aspartame ended in 1992.

  • ruth

    Thank you for Notice .

  • Johnny Genlock

I ordered a Coke today at lunch and it was totally undrinkable. My Coke Classic tasted like it was diet Coke. I can't consume that Aspartame garbage or it will put me under the table almost instantly. The stuff's true poison. I had some guy give me a stick of gum with Aspartame in it and I had to cancel my plans and go lie down for about 45 minutes while my body processed the crap. My sensitivity to the stuff has been getting worse over the years. They give this to children!!! I recall the old Coke formula, how it tasted. Great stuff then. Now it's chemical soup.

Good post. Reminded me of my fist taste of Diet Coke, I was sick for two hours.

they were talking about the tumors on the rats were the same size as golfballs, not the rats were the size of the golfball?

When I got diagnosed with Hypoglycemia, which was 32 years ago, I started drinking Tab, then as soon as Diet Coke came out, drank that, which has been around 30 years ago…I average 6 a day, drink nothing else, I'm 57, and no sign of cancer…death is inevitable, some people will die with certain things, others won't. Live a little, instead of being so scared of doing what the medical profession insists that you do.

    • Dennis

Why would you drink TAB or Diet Coke if you are "Hypoglycemic." Did you mean "Hyperglycemia?"

      • Erik

I was hypoglycemic as well. I did nothing to cause it. My body simply produces more insulin than the average person and in effect when i take in sugar, i get a harder crash than most. In order to avoid a hard crash, I avoid the sugar. I drink diet sodas as well for this fact. I am healthy and while I am aware that many chemicals cause cancer, including those in diet drinks, i see no problem in enjoying them. I'll let you know when I get cancer. We ARE all going to die anyway. Might as well enjoy your life.

    • JIMBE'

YOU ARE NOT SETTIN A GOOD EXAMPLE OF A HEALTHY PERSON FROM THE GET GO. HYPOGLYCEMIA IS NOT A NORMAL THING IN MOST PEOPLE SO YOU MUST HAVE BEEN CONSUMING SOMETHING TO CAUSE IT IN THE FIRST PLACE. SO YOUR*RE SAYING DON*T PAY ATTENTION TO WHAT YOU EAT YOUR*RE GONNA DIE ANYWAY. WELL YES BUT BEING SICKLY AND BROKEN DOWN DURING YOUR LIFE IS*NT A WISE THING TO CONTRIBUTE TO. "OH IT*S JUST A LITTLE CANCER CAUSING AGENT , YOU*RE GOING TO DIE ANYWAY, SO YOU MIGHT AS WELL SUFFER WHEN YOU DO" THAT*S WHAT YOU*RE SAYING WITH THE SUGGESTION UP THERE. BTW, ARE YOU OVER WEIGHT LIKE THE AVERAGE AMERICAN?

      • Erik

Jimbe – Just because you live your life in fear doesn't mean the rest of us have to. They have you right where they want you. When did Morgan mention suffering? I seem to remember her speaking quite fondly of her experiences. We're all entitled to our opinions and stories of our experience. If you don't like it, please move on. I see no reason to fear monger those who chose to roll with the punches and accept life with all it's joys and vices. What are your vices? I know of no healthy happy people who would attack somebody over something as simple as admitting to enjoying diet soda.

    • BeeTee

I was also severely hypoglycemic and I believe it was due to drinking aspartame. If you read complaints from people who feel they were poisoned by aspartame, most were hypoglycemic and abstaining from aspartame completely rid them of hypoglycemia.

  • TF

Go to a Mexican store and look at their coke and pepsi. Mostly in glass bottles and only real sugar used. All other stores sell it in cans and plastic with the high fructose corn syrup. What's up with that?

    • Bob Alvin

High Fat Corn Shit is much cheaper, and companies think Americans won't notice the difference (since it still sells).

  • Ella

Fructose, corn sugar, is in almost all sodas. 99% of all corn is genetically modified (GMO). Fructose is being added to many products and is proven to be harmful to the body. Our bodies do not know what to do with the synthetic and modified crap.

When the modified stuff entered the market, the obesity started to climb. These corporation are selling harmful products and don't care about you or me.

    Stop buying the crap!

    • Ella

Coke and Pepsi are a part of the problem. People who quit drinking sodas lost weight and felt healthier.

Totally agree to you Ella! Millions of people are so stupid that they are ready to ruin their health just for "tasting" this coke.

Runestone, keep drinking your diet Coke, way too many people on this planet.

    • http://www.summerlinnaturedoctor.com Dr. Mark

Is that a new corporate slogan for the Coca Cola company?

    • LucyVP

Telling people to die instead of giving supporting research is always a good way convince intelligent people your argument is sound.

"In a study in which rats were given the sugar substitute, 67 percent of all female rats developed tumors roughly the size of golf balls or larger."

…please post the scientific, peer-reviewed study. I'd be most interested and would curb my consumption immediately, should it be true.

"Showing that the company is more interested in preserving sales than actually ridding its products of known cancer-causing substances, the company chose to remove the toxic ingredient to avoid the warning label — not to actively protect the health of the consumer."

…again, please post the scientific, peer-reviewed paper substantiating your outrageous allegations.

    Kindest regards,

    • Walt Whitman

      I agree with Anonymous!

Runestone, do you work for Coca Cola by any chance?? Just Google Aspartame and you'll see tonnes of pages on the 'Poison'!!

    • Jennie

The studies on aspartame are all out there – perhaps you should stop asking others to do research for you, and do it yourself. This information has been available for years.

    • Zeus

WOW!! Amazing!! There's enough info on the net about all of the ingredients of anything you're ingesting including Aspartame and High Fructose Corn Syrup and yet you're looking for a "scientific, peer review paper as a reason to either choose to consume or not consume said ingredients. Well the truth is you don't have to stop taking your coke or Pepsi if that's what you wish and you might actually live a long life but your quality of life later on will be compromised and the odds are stacked against you based on the simple and quite easy google search that lead me to this site:
