Wendy’s Natural Cut Fries Are Far From Natural

People are starting to know more than ever as to how food here in America is treated and created. With fabulous documentaries available like Food Inc. and King Corn to reveal the secret behind food and its treatment and care, the adoption of an organic lifestyle is continuously growing. Junk food and fast food may stick around for a while due to hard-hitting advertising which has been going on for years. But the truth is coming out, and the deception is being revealed. This is at least the case with Wendy’s Natural Cut Fries.

False Advertising and Misrepresentation

Last fall, Wendy’s came out with Natural Cut Fries with Sea Salt as a promotion masking them as making more “natural” foods to increase sales. Although smart move by Wendy’s for noticing the boom in health consciousness, they are doing nothing more than false advertising. Wendy’s thought that by adding ‘sea salt’ and going with a more natural look with their fries (leaving the potato skins on), sales would shoot up thanks to healthy decision making by customers. While sales may or may not have increased with that promotion for Wendy’s, anyone even close to realm of being seriously healthy knows not to trust mega-corporations and their marketing tactics.

Wendy’s Natural Cut Fries are far from natural, as they go through numerous very unnatural treatments. The fries are first sprayed with sodium acid pyrophosphat,a chemical used in this case to prevent the potatoes from turning brown due to the intense deep frying sessions they must go through. This process occurs once at the factory as well as once at the restaurant. The fries are also teamed up with ingredients dextrose and dimethylpolysiloxane (good luck pronouncing that one). Dextrose is a corn derived sugar – most likely from genetically modified corn – meant to help the fries retain their ‘natural’ color while dimethylpolysiloxane is a silicone-based chemical food additive used to stabilize the frying oil to reduce foaming.

Fast Food Ingredients and More Deception

It’s funny to see how unnatural Wendy’s Natural Cut Fries really are. They are using ingredients found in many fast food products, some of which have been big news. McDonald’s Chicken McNuggets, for example, contain about all the same harmful ingredients as Wendy’s Natural Cut Fries.

  • Autolyzed yeast extract
  • Dextrose
  • Sodium phosphate
  • Dimethylpolysiloxane

Wendy’s also aren’t the only ones participating in misrepresentation. Although most mega-corporations use false advertising, one other example is Pringles potato chips. Pringles actually don’t come from potatoes in any recognizable way – a tactic possibly to be exempt from certain taxes regarding potato chips.

It will take some time for people and companies to move fully away from the chemicals and harmful ingredients used in the food supply, and unfortunately false advertising may never subside. But for this all to happen, don’t support these mega-corporations by buying from them. The easiest way to transform the way our society eats is to support organic suppliers and never support those who chemicalize it.
