The Substance that Supports DNA, Energy, Mood, and More
(NaturalSociety.com) S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe) is an important, naturally occurring substance in the body that is vital for numerous activities. SAMe helps to support the production of neurotransmitters in the brain, which can affect mood and our overall sense of well-being, as well as cognitive performance. In depressed people, it is though that SAMe is depleted, and SAMe has been more effective than pharmaceuticals like Prozac in boosting mental health. Europeans have been using it for decades to help them feel more balanced.
SAMe also supports the DNA of mammals in a process called methylation which is responsible for many gene activities including somatic inheritance and cellular differentiation (when a cell decides to become a liver cell or a heart cell, for example). Without SAMe in sufficient quantities, our messenger RNA has a hard time communicating with our DNA, and many important processes are inhibited.
As reported by University of Maryland Medical Center:
“SAMe is not found in food. It is produced by the body from ATP and the amino acid methionine…S-Adenosylmethionine (SAMe) is a naturally occurring compound that is found in almost every tissue and fluid in the body… [It] plays a role in the immune system, maintains cell membranes, and helps produce and break down brain chemicals, such as serotonin, melatonin, and dopamine. It works with vitamin B12 and folate (vitamin B9). Being deficient in either vitamin B12 or folate may reduce levels of SAMe in your body.
Numerous scientific studies have shown that SAMe helps relieve the pain of osteoarthritis, and other studies suggest that SAMe may help treat depression…fibromyalgia and liver disease… “
Even more important is SAMe’s support of the inhibiting or suppression of endogenous retroviral genes and other harmful DNA that can be incorporated into a genome over time (such as with these weird GMO gene alterations we are forced to endure currently).
One of the surprising benefits of SAMe is reported by the International Journal of Neuropsychopharmacology, in which SAMe was found to inhibit DNA damage caused by cocaine use!
“At the gene level, we discovered that SAM modulated cocaine-induced DNA methylation by inhibiting both promoter-associated CpG-island hyper- and hypomethylation in the NAc but not in the reference tissue cerebellum.”
Dosage for Each Ailment
SAMe should not be given to children without a doctor’s supervision, but adults can take SAMe in supplement form for the various ailments mentioned above. The University of Maryland Medical Center notes dosages used in studies for the following conditions:
- Depression: 800 – 1,600 mg of SAMe per day, in 2 divided doses (morning and afternoon)
- Osteoarthritis: 600 – 1,200 mg per day in 2 – 3 divided doses
- Fibromyalgia: A dosage of 400 mg 2 times per day for 6 weeks
- Alcoholic liver disease: 600 – 1,200 mg per day by mouth in divided doses for 6 months enhances liver function. For liver disease, a qualified health care provider should supervise administration of SAMe.
S-adenosylmethionine is important enough as a protector of our DNA expression, but it also makes us feel better, more energetic, and can even reduce pain in arthritis sufferers, while boosting mental clarity. It’s a natural supplement not to live without.
