Stretch marks – some of us lovingly refer to them as our “stripes” or our badges of honor. They are often proof of one of your greatest achievements (in the case of a child), and though they are a constant reminder of significantly larger days, many people would rather they disappear after the baby is born. While common knowledge tells us stretch marks won’t ever fully disappear, there are some home remedies for stretch marks that you can utilize to lessen their appearance overtime.
Stretch marks are caused by the stretching of the skin that occurs during pregnancy or a weight gain. While they may start out red, pink, or purple, they usually fade to white indented marks over time, similar to other scars. According to MayoClinic, stretch marks are even more pronounced in people with higher levels of cortisone, a hormone produced in the adrenal glands that weakens elastic fibers in the skin.
Some Natural Solutions for Stretch Marks
Stretch mark treatments are aimed at improving skin elasticity or improving the appearance of existing stretch marks. Obviously, the earlier you can begin your treatment regimen (preferably before the stretch marks even appear), the better results you’ll likely experience.
- 1. Cocoa Butter is a classic stretch mark remedy. It improves skin texture and increases blood flow to improve elasticity. Massage natural cocoa butter (not something made primarily with mineral oil or petrolatum) into the affected area two or more times daily. Take your time and massage it into the skin fully.
- 2. Aloe vera is another good option that is less greasy than cocoa butter. If you can get the gel straight from an aloe vera plant, all the better. It’s chocked full of vitamins C and E which can help to reduce the appearance of existing scars like stretch marks. Apply once daily until the gel is absorbed and skin is dry. It shouldn’t be surprising to see aloe on the list, as the health benefits of aloe vera include protecting the skin from skin cancer. - 3. Olive oil doesn’t only have uses in the kitchen. This too can be applied to existing stretch marks. It’s vitamins A, K, and D are great at improving skin texture and tone. You can even combine the olive oil with aloe vera to get a “supercure” for lightening scars.
- 4. Hydration is crucial in maintaining healthy skin elasticity. Drinking plenty of water while you are pregnant can help your skin cope with the pressure on it. Likewise, continuing to drink a lot of water afterwards can help improve skin appearance.
Stretch marks may never fully disappear. But, they will fade with time and a little self care.
