According to researchers with the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center, curcumin (from turmeric) and piperine (from black pepper) may kill the cells that eventually lead to breast tumors.

In their research, curcumin and piperine were applied directly to breast cells. The substances killed what are known as stem cells, which lead to possible tumor growth. Even more exciting, they didn’t damage the healthy breast tissue – normal cells weren’t affected.

“If we can limit the number of stem cells, we can limit the number of cells with potential to form tumors,” the study’s lead author, Dr. Madhuri Kakarala, a clinical lecturer in internal medicine at Michigan’s medical school and a research investigator at the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System, said in a university news release.

This isn’t the only research showing how substances like turmeric can prevent breast tumors. Showcasing just one of the countless ways you can begin beating cancer with nutrition, research has shown that turmeric can slow down the spread of breast cancer. Studies published in the British Journal, NATURE have previously discovered a molecule known as RANKL. The findings suggest that if RANKL molecules were blocked, then early stages of breast cancer could be prevented, while advanced progression of the disease and metastasis could be halted.

Turmeric has a light smoky flavor that is popular in curry and Middle Eastern dishes. Add it to rice, curry, pasta, potatoes, fish, or even eggs.
