California’s Cancer Label may Soon Hit Monsanto’s Roundup, Glyphosate
California will likely require that Monsanto has a label on most Roundup bottles declaring that they contain carcinogenic ingredients. Under Proposition 65, the agency’s notice of intent aims to add these chemicals to the approximately 800 chemicals that are known to cause cancer.
An announcement has surfaced from the California Environmental Protection Agency (Cal/EPA) which states they will begin labeling Monsanto’s herbicide ingredient, glyphosate, as a “probable carcinogen.” This mirrors reports from the World Health Organization’s IARC
The move signifies efforts to protect health and wildlife in the agriculture-heavy state even as use of weed killers that include such toxins hits an all-time high.
Prop 65 which has been around since the 1980’s already requires any chemical manufacturers that sell ingredients which are known to cause birth defects or cancer to list them as such.
Dr. Nathan Donley, staff scientist with the Center for Biological Diversity (CBD) said:
“California’s taking an important step toward protecting people and wildlife from this toxic pesticide. More than 250 million pounds of glyphosate are used each year in the United States, and the science is clear that it’s a threat to public health and countless wildlife species. It’s long past time to start reining in the out-of-control use of glyphosate in the United States.”
As RT reports:
“The EPA’s office of environmental health hazard assessment in California wants to label four chemicals, including the most popular herbicide and key ingredient of Monsanto’s Roundrup, glyphosate, as “known to cause cancer,” following the most recent WHO cancer research division’s report.
The “notice of intent” envisions placing Glyphosate within 30 days to the list of chemicals that are known to cause cancer, classification of which falls under the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, or the Proposition 65. Under the Act any chemicals that threatens human life require a businesses to provide a “clear and reasonable” warning label before exposing individuals to a chemical on the list.”
Yet, California still won’t label GMO. This is asinine.
I think they should label GMO but having to disclose the use of Roundup on Food packages may be a dead giveaway that indicates the presence GMOS when a food is sprayed with Roundup like a sore thumb. A lot of GMO crops are engineered to grow when roundup is sprayed. The idea was that if your crop is resistant to Roundup (Glyphosate), it would grow and all the weeds die when sprayed. Now if they have to label the use of this chemical as cancer causing, less people will buy it, and make farmers think twice about using it.
I am, as I write this comment, in a cancer ward being treated for Lymphoma. Though I have no proof that it was Round Up, I have some idea that it might have been the cause of the cancer. I used Round Up in my yard. I recall feeling a strange sensation on my skin, in just a little spot. That spot burned a little. For several months that spot felt strange from time to time. It felt like a bug was crawling right there. I may have gotten a drop of Round Up on that spot, and didn’t wash it off soon enough. The little spot developed into a lump, that turned out to be “cutaneous T cell lymphoma”.
Like I said, I have no proof, but I got rid of the Round Up in a safe manner. It will never come on my land again as long as I live. I’d advise others to never use it.
