Vitamin D and Weight Loss – Recognizing the Connection

Vitamin D is a well-known cancer preventative and overall health enhancer, but some researchers have even made a serious connection between vitamin D and weight loss. The University of Minnestoa study found that higher vitamin D levels coupled with a properly balanced diet helps people lose more weight than if simply utilizing a properly balanced diet. What this means is that one of many vitamin D benefits is the acceleration of fat loss, diet aside.

Vitamin D Benefits | Vitamin D and Weight Loss

The subjects were monitored for 11 weeks, and given 750 fewer calories than their estimated daily needs. They also had their fat distribution measured with DXA (bone densitometry) scans. On average, subjects had insufficient vitamin D levels, however, the authors found that baseline, or pre-diet, vitamin D levels ‘predicted weight loss in a linear relationship’. For every increase of 1 ng/mL in level of 25-hydroxycholecalciferol – the precursor form of vitamin D and an effective method to measuring vitamin D levels – participants lost nearly half of a pound (0.196 kg) more on their calorie-restricted diet.

Similarly, for each 1-ng/mL increase in the active form of vitamin D,1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol, individuals lost about 0.25lbs (0.107 kg) more. In addition, higher baseline vitamin D levels (both the precursor and active forms) predicted greater loss of abdominal fat, lending even greater reason to take advantage of the relationship between vitamin D and weight loss.

An interesting part of the study is weight loss occurred particularly around the abdomen, a sweet spot every overweight individual wants to target. Could the vitamin D and weight loss connection focus on fat loss on the stomach area specifically? Of course it can, but first you need to build up a proper nutritional platform to work from. Vitamin D and other essential nutrients can help speed up the process of weight loss, ward off cancer, and other deadly diseases, but food can not be replaced. Ensure that you are eating the correct foods, and be careful about deceptive labeling.

“Our results suggest the possibility that adding Vitamin D to a reduced-calorie diet will lead to increased weight loss in individuals with low Vitamin D levels,” said Researcher Shalamar Sibley, M.D., who headed the study.

These findings are yet one additional indicator that vitamin D can be used to treat various conditions, as well as promote weight loss. The majority of the U.S. is deficient in vitamin D, leading to a multitude of health problems such as increased risk of contracting a cold or flu, and even depression. Some individuals don’t yet recognize the benefits of vitamin D, but sharing the knowledge on the vitamin D and weight loss connection could ignite a thirst for more knowledge.

The problem is that Global Dimming (caused by GeoEngineering) is decreasing the sunshine. Currently, in several studies I have read, most people are deficient in vitamin D due to not enough sunshine. Look Up! If your sky is criss-crossed with persisting jet trails, you may have a hard time getting enough sunshine, but then, you shouldn't be outside anyway due to the aluminum oxide fall-out.

Receptors in your brain need D to keep hunger and cravings in check, as well as to pump up levels of the mood-elevating chemical serotonin. (Good thing, since dieting often comes with a heaping side of crankiness.) D even optimizes your body's ability to absorb other important weight-loss nutrients, especially calcium. When your body lacks calcium, it can experience up to a fivefold increase in the fatty acid synthase, an enzyme that converts calories into fat. In a 2009 study published in the British Journal of Nutrition, obese women who were put on a 15-week diet and took 1,200 milligrams of calcium a day lost six times more weight than women who followed the diet alone. The end result: By fueling your body with the D-rich nutrients it needs to get out of a fat-storage state and into a fat-burning one, you could potentially speed weight loss by up to 70 percent.

    Great article Anthony!

Vitamin D is an excellent fat burner. As with any vitamin, you need to consult your doctor before taking it to reduce fat.

Vitamin D is really very effective for fat burning capabilities. Many researches has shown that Vitamin D is very useful for burning the fat. Vitamin D is more effective for reducing the belly fat.

i think it has to do with places being to cold, hot and vitamin d levels, and sunshine as i think summer and winter survival mechanism to decrease energy for self preservation during wintery conditions .
the far south areas are really hot which causes ppl to stay inside most of the time with cool air, countries to the far north are really cold thus ppl stay inside for heat and are not exposed to much sun.
places like america ppl make plenty of money to buy tech and entertain themsselves inside. ppl buy homes and stay inside to stay cool and warm and theres winter 1/2 the year . and lastly the middle east isnt exactly well developed with income and tech most ppl are usually strolling around as theres not much to do and theres plenty of sunshine.
    anyone else have a theory.

as fat cells have receptors for vitamin d, leptin is also found highly in obese ppl, but those receptors for leptin are deficient the more the person in question gains which in turn causes increase in appetite to make the body more efficient by storing fat to decrease energy needs to warm the body during winter which may explain why ppl deficient in vitamin d have less energy and sometimes need a nap which may also explain why the belly seems to gain the most weight since its the center of mass which so the body can reach that energy easier than if it was displaced somewhere else. the power of biology is amazing. im not saying that this is right but it makes sense. i wouldnt mind if someone commented or make notes of this so i can add to the theory

when i said "the belly seems to gain the most weight since its the center of mass which so the body can reach that energy easier than if it was displaced somewhere else" it may be also do to other reasons such as keeping vital organs healthy and the body warm. there was also a study where rats were tested with leptin related blocking of receptors( i think it was receptors i dont want to have to search the web for it again) and they burned all of there surplus calories no extra fat formation ever happened so i honestly think vitamin d is the answer to obesity. im sorry to keep writing these comments but i keep getting ideas and putting articles together. btw i know my grammers bad but im great at technological things.

As vitamin D levels in your body improve, sleep improves as well. Getting an adequate amount of sleep allows your body to repair and work more efficiently. It only makes sense that vitamin D (hormone) would affect weightloss.

I have been on Vitamin D therapy and have lost weight and feel soooo much better. Joints, allergies almost gone, better quality sleep. I wish I would have known this was the cause of my health issues long ago.

Be honest – there is absolutely no evidence that vitamin D abrogates central obesity other than anecdotal folly. Buyer beware. Do your research regarding requirements of this vitamin, and leave it at that.

Hahahahahaha… funny funny response there Scott!

I became MUCH healthier all around after I started supplementing Vitamin D…. I don't need any studies to prove what happened to MY health (and my blood work DOES prove it!). I'm happy to report, I will soon be off ALL Pharmaceuticals and on my way to MUCH better health BECAUSE of it!
