Beg bugs are becoming an epidemic in major US cities, but a larger issue is the insecticides used to combat the problem. A new report has found that more than 100 Americans have become ill due to the overuse of bed bug insecticides, and it may have even led to 1 death. Oftentimes insecticides and pesticides are worse than the problem they seek to correct, leading to serious health conditions.
The insecticide issue spans 7 states, and are attributed to misuse of the insecticide. Most of the cases, as many as 93%, were from people attempting to address the beg bug problem at home without professional guidance.
“The majority of cases involved misuse,” said report co-author Dr. Geoffrey Calvert, a medical officer at the U.S. National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health.
