In U of C’s 2011 report some of these brands mentioned here as having “cleaned up their act” still failed to meet EVOO standards. Recently class action suits were filed against Filippo Berio and Bertolli. It’s a jungle out there and very difficult to know who to trust.

There is one easy way to determine if the olive oil in your house is real or fake, just put it in the refrigerator overnight. If it’s real olive oil, it will turn solid. If your bottle of olive oil has soybean, canola or some other oil added to it, then it won’t turn solid. Please update your article with this bit of information so people can know the truth.

Good idea, but most people are just too lazy to do this.

This has been done. About 99% of the olive oils out there are adulterated. Two that have been found to be “clean” are Trader Joe’s Extra Virgin California Estate Olive Oil and California Olive Ranch Extra Virgin Olive Oil. Most of the European ones have additives unless you are getting your oil from a private source.

    1. Yeah, the California Ranch stuff is the best, that’s the kind I always get.

    2. California Olive Ranch was what I settled on just by choosing from what was available at Safeway. After visiting their website and considering that they grow and bottle their oil, I concluded that they would have a difficult time passing off fake stuff.

How about olive oils from other countries, such as Spain or Greece? Since the story concentrates on Italy as the source of a lot of the fraud, can these other countries of origin be more trustworthy?

“However, producers of these brands may have cleaned up their acts since then.”

    WOW!
Isn’t that statement in the article helpful… And only one recommended brand. No doubt, folks will be ripping the brand off the store shelves in record time.

Nice to know I was paying for high priced NON-olive oil (despite reading the labels).
I wonder where our nanny state govment is regarding this issue. No doubt a kickback is in play.
    Bas-tards.

  6. One more reason to call BS when the gov tells us how safe they keep us!

The Olive Oil produced in other countries such as Spain & Greece are NOT inferior, there’s a reason why the IOC is based in Madrid, Spain: because Spain produces more Olives than
Italy, Greece, Tunisia, Syria & Turkey put together. Those countries import oil & olives from Spain and resell it. It does NOT mean that the olive oil is inferior or not good. It just means that the have a customer base for olive oil but cannot meet the demand. So if the label says Olive oil from Spain, it is still good olive oil. If they adulterate their oil, that’s a different matter. But Olive Oil from Spain, in my opinion is the best, because I have tasted it and compared it.

  8. I can tell the stuff in the photo is not, no good self respecting olive oil is that colour.
My grandfather, n Greece grafted olives trees and made olive oil … . Real olive oil will solidify when refrigerated, every time and any large amounts should be refrigerated or kept cool at the very least.

The costco brand Kirkland Organic Olive oil does contain soy oil. I had a reaction to it. Hope this helps others.
