A major decision will soon be made which will ultimately determine whether or not a known hazardous chemical will continue to inhibit food products, plastic packaging, personal care products, and an abundance of other common items. By March 31, the United States Food and Drug Administration will decide if toxic chemical bisphenol-A (BPA) will continue to be used in widescale production.

FDA Could Potentially Ban BPA, Decision to be Made by March 31

In 2010, Canada was one of the first nations to take a large step in the fight against BPA. Even in the face of industry opposition, Canada has declared BPA to be a toxic substance. Although in 2009 the American Chemistry Council filed a formal notice of objection in labeling BPA as toxic, under the argument that it is indeed safe, the objection was rejected on July 27 2010. More recently, French lawmakers decided to ban bisphenol-A from being used in all food packaging. Maybe the U.S. will catch up in protecting public health from bisphenol-a on March 31, or maybe not.

While the ban may potentially occur shortly after the decision made by French lawmakers, the FDA says that the potential U.S. ban of BPA is prompted by a 2008 lawsuit filed against the FDA by the National Resources Defense Council (NRDC). Months before the lawsuit, the NRDC filed a petition with the FDA requesting that BPA be banned from food packaging. No more than 180 days can pass before the FDA legally has to respond to written petitions, but according the NRDC, the FDA failed to meet the deadline and therefore filed suit to force a response. Although the FDA is now finally answering, it took court intervention just for the organization to do it’s job.

“Now, the FDA has agreed to give us an answer — 41 months after the petition was filed,” the NRDC’s Sarah Janssen wrote in a Dec.

Meanwhile, other nations have been taking a stand against BPA:

The European Union, Turkey, and other countries banned BPA from baby bottles in 2008.

In 2007, Canada banned BPA from baby bottles

Denmark banned BPA in baby food products.

The Japanese industry can no longer use BPA for can linings.

Bisphenol-A, an industrial chemical know for disrupting hormones, is causing a plethora of health problems. BPA has been shown to ignite hyperactivity and depression in young girls, while also being linked to breast cancer in more than 130 studies. Infertility and fertility defects are also caused by BPA exposure.

The chemical is so ubiquitous that it has been found in the urine of nearly 93 percent of Americans. BPA levels are undoubtedly higher in those who consume food from a can, with a Harvard study finding that eating canned soup can spike urinary bisphenol-A levels by 1,200 percent compared to fresh soup.

Perhaps on March 31 the FDA will finally act on the BPA epidemic. Until then, and until BPA use is truly avoided by companies, it is imperative to educate yourself on how to naturally reverse the effects of toxic BPA.

Sometimes hearing and reading about how organic food surpasses conventional food in quality just isn’t enough. Even with all of the information available, some people still aren’t convinced that there is actually a difference between organic and conventional foods. In a simple yet very informative presentation, a young lady named Elise provides a visual example of how organic food rises above conventional.

How Organic Surpasses Conventional Food - Common Pesticide Hinders Growth of Potatoes, Crops

For her presentation, Elise purchased 3 different sweet potatoes: a conventional potato, an allegedly organic potato from the same super market, and an organic potato from a certified organic food market. After placing the potatoes in a large mug of water, Elise waited to see how long it would take for each one to grow new vines. The results? After two 3 week periods using two different potatoes, the conventionally grown potatoes failed to grow any vines while the allegedly organic potato grew small vines in one month. Not surprisingly, the organic potato from the organic food market rose above the other two potatoes with very large vines in only one week.

What Elise discovered was that the conventional potatoes are sprayed with a pesticide called bud nip, also known as chlorpropham. The chemical is also sprayed on blueberries, carrots, spinach, onions, tomatoes, beets, and cranberries. According to Pesticide Management Education Program:

Chlorpropham is moderately toxic by ingestion. It may cause irritation of the eyes or skin. Symptoms of poisoning in laboratory animals have included listlessness, incoordination, nose bleeds, protruding eyes, bloody tears, difficulty in breathing, prostration, inability to urinate, high fevers, and death. Autopsies of animals have shown inflammation of the stomach and intestinal lining, congestion of the brain, lungs and other organs, and degenerative changes in the kidneys and liver

Needless to say, it isn’t a good idea to ingest any pesticides at all. These are harmful chemicals that are comprising the health of animals humans, and insects – helping lead to the downfall of our ecosystem by poisoning honeybees, crucial pollinators. Pesticides have also been found to be contributing to the obesity crisis currently sweeping the globe.

So there is the question: Which potato would you want to eat?

Almost four decades ago I was taught a different approach to health and healing than what is now taught at western medical practices. I was taught how to find simplicity in the complexity of life. As stated, the cure is always found in the cause. We must always seek the cause for health challenges and then the signs, signals and symptoms will simply disappear. I was also taught we must stop doing those things that contribute to dis-ease first and then start doing those things that contribute to health. As doctors or healers, we should suggest the minimum in recommendations and supplementation for the maximum result. The below is a simple ten step program continued for achieving optimum health and longevity.

The Simplicity of Complexity | Ten Steps to Optimum Health – Part 2

5. Mind - What we don’t use we lose. Reading is mentally stimulating, therefore always be reading a good book. By simply not watching TV for a couple of hours a day it will give you some time to read. Learn how to play a musical instrument. You don’t need a $10,000 Baby Grand piano. A flute, guitar, violin, or one of many other inexpensive instruments will get you in the game. If that is not interesting to you, perhaps you can learn woodworking or sewing? There are literally hundreds of hobbies or projects you can wrap your mind around. Playing chess or cards is not only challenging, but you may just develop a lifelong friendship with your “playmates.”

6. Attitude - Don’t take life so seriously. We are not here for a long time, but the time spent here should be comprised of good feelings. Learn to forgive the unforgivable. Through daily prayer or meditation and relaxation you will learn to deal with or release emotional issues, thereby creating a more peaceful life. There is nothing wrong with expressing yourself emotionally; in fact, to emote is to promote internal balance and harmony, however, emotion is Energy-in-Motion. We need to keep emotions moving. If you are angry about something, express your anger and then question why you are angry. As with all concerns, correct the cause and you will remove the affect. Emotions and/or the stress they cause should be in our control. How we emote is the key to living a less stressful life.

7. Spirituality - I am not talking about religion, I am talking about spirituality. Unless you are an atheist, seek to re-discover your own divinity or specialty. I used to be a truth seeker until I realized I am that which I am seeking. Creative consciousness develops the Law of Attraction. Setting your intention and accepting it as reality, will bring it forth. It is important to note, however, that we do not get what we want — we get who we are. Whether for health, finances or relationships, we control our thoughts and destiny. We control our out-of-control-ness. Learn to take control of your life. The best book I have ever read on this subject is Excuse Me, Your Life Is Waiting by Lynn Grabhorn. Read it and read it again. You can also read the Healing Codes.

8. Achievement/Action - Education and taking effective action are keys to health, wealth and happiness. Learn how to set a goal and achieve it. Start small and work up from there.

When I was a young boy, I was hired by one of my neighbors to pull weeds in her backyard. The entire 1/4 acre was wall to wall weeds over six inches high. I was overwhelmed. I then discovered by taking four Popsicle sticks and some string that I could rope off one square foot at a time. I only concentrated on the square in front of me and moved it one foot at a time. Before long, I had pulled all the weeds. Don’t get overwhelmed. Just attempt to do something you can handle and move on from there.

Seek and “become” peace, love, joy, prosperity, freedom and happiness, and you will find them. No one was born to hate, they had to learn how. We can therefore un-learn. We truly must be the change we want to see. Remember, we are all spiritual beings having a human experience. Teach by example by becoming who you are. We are not here for a long time, but we can be here for a rewarding time. See the rewards and be grateful. Educate yourself on the truth concerning health, wealth, relationships, the law, politics, religion and everything in-between. Screen everything you read, see and hear with your internal common sense and logic meter. After you acquire accurate information, you can then make intelligent decisions and take effective action.

9. Detoxification - There is no way around it. Even if you do everything I have suggested in the above eight points, this world is still toxic. Just driving down the street will expose you to a multitude of toxins contained in the atmosphere. Being in public will expose you to a host of germs, bacteria, viruses, parasites and other pathogenic organisms others may be carrying. If you eat or drink anything from any restaurant, you risk ingesting preservatives, toxins, dyes, hydrogenated oils, chemicals, hormones, flavor enhancers, corn syrup and a litany of other additives that are unhealthy. The bottom line: we need to detoxify on a regular basis. Just drinking charged distilled water with electrolytic minerals will start the process. Eating non-toxic, organic fresh food will help as well.

10. Supplementation - Again, there is no way around it. Our soil is thoroughly depleted of vital nutrients, specifically minerals. Mineral deficient soil produces mineral deficient crops — organic or not. Eating mineral deficient food makes us mineral deficient. And so it is with vitamins and all other nutrients. In order to truly be healthy, we must supplement our diet with whole-food nutrients, not synthetic, chemist-made pills. Always start with a whole-food mineral complex as minerals are foundational. The best minerals I have found to date are contained in fossilized stony coral. Additionally, eating concentrated whole-food supplements made from fruits and vegetables with added vitamin D3 will go a long way to achieving optimum health and longevity.

I am not going to say, “trust me, I’m a doctor.” In fact, some websites say just that. What I will say is, question everything, everyone, and do some research. If what you read, hear or see does not make sense, stop and move on to something else.

Remember this: If you don’t take the time to be healthy, you will ultimately have to take the time to be sick. It’s your choice…

On the so-called natural healing side, they push their clinics and spas with many pitching supplements, herbs, devices and other “stuff” to also treat disease. What’s the difference? Other than the obvious toxic side-effects of experimental orthodox medicine, not much, for both treat disease.

Many in natural healing are simply using natural protocols in an allopathic (symptom treating) application. As an example, if you have a headache, your medical doctor might suggest aspirin and your natural healing doctor might suggest the herb feverfew. Both suggestions only treat the symptom of a deeper underlining concern. From a brain tumor, allergy, hormonal imbalance to spinal subluxations or misalignments, there are many causes of headaches; and the cure is always found in the cause. Taking aspirin or feverfew will never get to the cause, and therefore you are only treating symptoms.

Almost four decades ago, I was taught a different approach to health and healing. The below is a simple ten step program for achieving optimum health and longevity.

The Simplicity of Complexity: Ten Steps to Optimum Health – Part 1

1. Stop/Start – As I mentioned, we must stop doing those things that we know make us sick. Avoid toxic, highly processed food and sugary liquids — including concentrated fruit juices. Do not smoke. Drink alcohol in moderation. We are what we eat, assimilate and don’t eliminate. Remove as many toxic elements from your environment as possible. You may not be able to change the world, but you can change your world. From your home, yard and office, learn what materials, products and electronics are harmful and remove them. Additionally, the healthier you become the less likely you will need toxic medication and/or medical treatment. An ounce of prevention is truly worth a ton of cures. After stopping the disease contributors, start the following health contributors:

2. Food – We need to eat the best, non-toxic food we can afford. Organic fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, sprouts, legumes, free range chicken, eggs, turkey, limited dairy (raw yogurt, kefir, goats milk), and wild Alaskan salmon will provide all the vitamins, minerals, enzymes, amino and essential fatty acids, probiotics, antioxidants and glyco-nutrients we need to thrive. If you want beef or pork, make sure it is free range with no hormones, antibiotics, drugs or preservatives added. Remember, it costs more money to buy packaged, processed junk food than it does shopping at your local farmer’s market. And don’t forget the cost of illness from eating toxic, junk food.

3. Water – We need to drink pristine water and lots of it. Of all the different waters available, I believe we need pure H2O. The best I know of is distilled. However, drinking pure distilled water, over time, can lead to a leeching of minerals from the body. Therefore, I recommend re-mineralizing the water with electrolytic minerals such as sea salt, Celtic, Himalayan, New Zealand or Zeta Crystals.

One half teaspoon of either of these electrolytic mineral sources to one gallon of distilled water will make the perfect water to hydrate the body and increase cellular zeta (electrical) potential. I personally buy water from a company that filters it then uses reverse osmosis, distills it and finally, ozonates it. Five gallons costs five dollars delivered. I then electrically charge it with electrolytic minerals. In order to replace fluids lost from urination, defecation, perspiration and respiration, drink one half of your body weight in ounces daily. If you weigh 128 pounds, you need 64 ounces of charged distilled water daily. That is eight, eight ounce glasses per day.

4. Exercise - I am not talking about walking to the kitchen or bathroom. The human body is mostly fluid, perhaps 75 to 85%. What makes fluid move is movement or exercise. Exercise allows the blood and lymphatic circulation to flow the way it must. Proper exercise increases lung capacity and heart strength. It contributes to clarity of thought. The P.A.C.E. method of exercise is the most reasonable approach to exercise I have seen to date. Go on-line and read about it. In addition, a fast walk for 30 minutes daily will help.

Hiking or backpacking in the great outdoors keeps one centered and grounded. Deep breathing is paramount for optimum health and longevity. Dancing, riding a bicycle, swimming, tennis, boxing, martial arts, skiing, you name it. Just do something you enjoy and do it everyday. I walk my dogs daily and use a stationary bicycle when the weather is poor. Otherwise, I ride my bike and use the Total Gym. I also take a FIR (far infrared) sauna every morning. This really gets the blood and lymph going, and opens the pores through perspiration. Bottom line: exercise is simple and is one key to living a long, healthy life.

Dioxin is the most caustic man-made chemical known. Dioxin is a general term for hundreds of chemicals that are produced in industrial processes that use chlorine and burning. Disturbingly, it has a half-life of 100+ years when it is leached into soil or embedded in water systems. Dioxin was the most harmful component in Agent Orange (the recipe for Agent Orange is 2,4-D and 2,4,5-T herbicides).

The EPA says that air emissions of dioxin have decreased by 90% since the 1980′s, but dioxin is dangerous at any level. The study appears to omit any analysis of dioxin transmission in water and land. The danger is growing because Dow AgroScience has received preliminary USDA approval for its 2,4-D herbicide resistant GMO corn. This means that dioxin contaminated 2,4-D herbicide will drench US farm land and pollute water supplies if the crops are widely planted.

EPA Dioxin Assessment Report

The EPA’s press release on dioxin’s health effects trumpeted the lie that current exposure rates “don’t pose significant health risks”. But the EPA does admit that there is a cancer risk, although they are not releasing their study on cancer at this time. Perhaps the delay is due to the fact that 95% of Americans have measurable levels of dioxin in their bodies.

The EPA’s claim that current levels are not a health risk is contradicted by another webpage on the EPA’s own site says that dioxin accumulates over a lifetime, persists for years, is likely to lead to an increased risk of cancer, and that the current exposure levels are “uncomfortably” close to levels that can cause “subtle” non-cancer effects. These so-called subtle effects may include birth defects, reproductive problems and immunosuppression.

There were 500,000 victims of birth defects in Viet Nam that can hardly be considered subtle. Dioxin is bad at any level especially since it accumulates in the body.

Humans are exposed to dioxin primarily through food sources. The EPA’s press release fails to mention that people who eat animal based foods like meat, dairy and eggs will continually increase their dioxin levels.

If dioxin is so safe, why does the Veterans Administration make automatic payments for a wide range of claims that include several types of cancers and leukemia, liver disease, heart disease, Parkinson’s disease and diabetes? American taxpayers are footing the bill for veterans’ Agent Orange dioxin injuries that are estimated to cost $42 billion over the next 10 years! Monsanto and Dow, the top 2 Agent Orange producers, should pay for all damages — not taxpayers.

While the EPA’s press release does acknowledge “certain industrial activities” as a cause of dioxin pollution, they omit any reference to chemical herbicides and pesticides. The EPA doesn’t mention that herbicide 2,4-D (half of the Agent Orange recipe) is the seventh largest source of dioxin in the US. Dow Chemical is the biggest 2,4-D manufacturer, and Dow is also listed as the #2 and #3 biggest industrial dioxin dumper in the US. Herbicide 2,4-D is polluting groundwater.

Shocking EPA Omission

The most disturbing omission by the EPA is its complete lack of oversight of a specific type of dioxin, 2,7-DCDD, that is one of the most potent kinds of dioxin. It is reported that DCDD is an inevitable by-product of 2,4-D herbicide manufacturing. The EPA doesn’t even regulate or monitor DCDD!

Therefore, the EPA’s report is incomplete and the true levels of dioxin are unknown.

Agent Orange GMOs

The sun is setting on Monsanto’s empire as their glyphosate herbicide is losing its effectiveness due to super weeds that have developed a tolerance to their glyphosate poison. Dow is slated to produce the next generation of GMOs which will include 2,4-D resistant corn, soy and cotton.

Farmers who don’t want to take the trouble to use targeted weed control and hand picking weeds prefer GMO products because they can just spray their crops with huge doses of herbicide and forget about them until harvest. From 1996 to 2008, GMO crops were responsible for 383 million pounds of herbicides sprayed on farmland in the US. These are the same genetically modified foods sold on grocery store shelves worldwide.

Therefore, we can expect a dramatic increase in dioxin production and pollution because Dow’s 2,4-D herbicide resistant crops will be saturated with the tainted herbicide.

Dow AgroScience & Monsanto

Dow AgroScience and Monsanto have struck up a partnership to produce stacked trait crops that will be resistant to Dow’s 2,4-D and Monsanto’s glyphosate poisons. It appears that Dow and Monsanto may be creating a cartel arrangement by joining forces to eliminate competition.

Monsanto and Dow have been able to skate away from accountability for damage caused by their products because diseases like cancer can take years to incubate. Victims are required to prove their injuries were directly caused by exposure to a carcinogen years after the exposure. This is nearly impossible to do. Monsanto and Dow should be made to prove their products are safe. Federal agency (EPA, FDA, USDA, etc) regulations are profoundly ineffective.

Remediation Clean Up

The EPA’s assessment will hopefully lead to remediation (clean up) of the environment in areas with high dioxin levels. The costs could be staggering because the proper process for soil remediation is to block tainted soil with concrete barriers to prevent water runoff into steams and then incinerating the soil. Water remediation is even more difficult.

Dow Chemical appears to be worried about this because they just agreed to buy dioxin contaminated homes near their Michigan dioxin-emitting plant.

If Monsanto were forced to clean up their pollution, they would go bankrupt.

Conclusion

The EPA omitted critical information in its assessment, and current dioxin levels are a significant health risk. Dioxin levels will increase when Dow’s Agent Orange 2,4-D resistant crops are planted.

The EPA’s lack of interest in dioxin DCDD is disgusting. Dioxin DCDD that contaminates 2,4-D herbicide is not tested, measured or monitored by the EPA, or even regulated. A Canadian research paper states that dioxin DCDD may have large public health implications due to its prevalence in our food and environment.

Current and future research will likely continue to make the dangers of cadmium more well known.

Is Cadmium More Dangerous for Children than Lead?

The study, led by Harvard University researchers, found that children with higher cadmium levels are three times as likely to have learning disabilities than those with lower levels. Study’s senior author Dr. Robert Wright explains:

“One of the important points of the study is that we didn’t study a population of kids who had very high exposures. We studied a population representative of the U.S. That we found any [effect] suggests this is occurring at relatively low levels…It does certainly point to the fact that we need more attention paid to the neurotoxic effects of cadmium in children”

A total of 2,199 children between the ages 6 and 15 were included in the study, with 12.6 percent of them having a learning disability and 10.5 percent being enrolled in special education classes. Those with the highest cadmium levels were 3.21 times more likely to have a learning disability than children less exposed.

Although cadmium is naturally found in much of the soil across the U.S., the heavy metal is also released by battery manufacturers, smelters, electroplating plants, and other industries. Cadmium is also present in inexpensive jewelry for kids. In 2010 the Associated Press tested children’s jewelry manufactured in China and found levels of cadmium, prompting store recalls. Canada also made the decision to crack down on cadmium in 2011, following tests performed in October of 2010 that found high concentrations of cadmium in some children’s jewelry sold in Canadian stores.

While there needs to be more research on the dangers of cadmium, past studies are collectively very consistent in showing how cadmium is a dangerous neurotoxin. High levels of exposure can lead to neurological problems as well as mental retardation and decreased IQ in children. The scientists highly recommend that the government re-evaluate cadmium’s place in society by instituting stricter rules for cadmium in food, soil, workplaces, and consumer products.

Scientific language can be used to obfuscate reality, especially in medicine. Several disclosures from whistle blowers and investigators have uncovered scandalous medical journal reporting. The extremely low rate of recovery from cancer using expensive toxic methods and creating more suffering continue.

Mainstream medicine disregards cured patients’ stories as anecdotal, meaning it isn’t “proven scientifically.” This is total bunk. Any of them can be proven scientifically, and many of these anecdotal cures are clinically documented. The cancer industry, which includes fund raisers, research universities, and Big Pharma, has too much to lose if alternative cures are acknowledged.

Currently, mainstream oncologists admit that their average cure rate is extremely low. What they usually offer is a few more months or years of life in bad health. That’s why fund raisers keep raising money for finding cures and Big Pharma keeps pumping out toxic chemicals that harm more than heal.

Most oncologists don’t know about the power of nutrition and detoxification to help your immune system handle almost anything. So they attack cancer cells using chemicals initially derived from chemical warfare’s mustard gas with the mindset of ignoring collateral damage. You’ve got to ‘destroy a village to save it’ logic.

But your immune system is your collateral. And it gets damaged to the point of dying. Meanwhile, dozens of actual safe and inexpensive cures are ignored.

A Few Examples of Real Cancer Cures

A retired teacher decides to burn both ends of her life candle and winds up with cancer. Her oncologist was insisting on surgery. She went to a friend who told her of the Gerson Institute and a retreat in Australia that applies similar protocols.

She was cured beyond expectation. Hear this incredible woman tell her story.

A man diagnosed with stage four prostate cancer is informed that sudden pH surges destroy cancer. He orders cesium for that purpose, but it doesn’t arrive in time for his next medical exam. Instead, he tries pH surging with bicarbonate of soda and molasses. In a few short weeks, he was cancer free.

A concerned father sneaks THC hemp (marijuana) oil into his toddler son’s feeding tube in an effort to reverse his ebbing health during cancer treatments. The little boy’s health soon surged and he became cancer free. The doctors never knew what the father did to reverse the boy’s failing health, as the father knew he would have been stopped.

A middle aged New Zealand man with leukemia goes into a coma from flu/pneumonia complications on top of leukemia. The hospital staff threatens to pull his life support until family members insist they try mega-dose IV vitamin C. He walks out of the hospital days later. A year later his checkup showed that he was free from leukemia.

Real People Really Cured are Real Stats

These highlights are but a few examples of real cases cured without chemo or radiation – there are thousands of them. Curing cancer naturally with patients who have not undergone chemo or radiation has an over 80% cure rate. Those who come to alternative methods half-dead from chemo and radiation as a last resort average just around a 50% cure rate.

But even this 50% is much higher than the three to five percent cure rate proudly offered by mainstream medicine. Mainstream medicine considers five years cancer free as cured, and that is very rare. Even after a remission, tumors reappear soon after.

Medical Authority Lies and Ridicules

Real people who use alternative treatments to successfully cure their cancer patients are disregarded. They can’t prove scientifically to mainstream medicine’s standard of proof that the alternative therapy cured their cancer patients. Ironically, many of those cured cancer victims had been sent home to die by mainstream doctors.

Unfortunately, it’s the science of authoritative obfuscation that the medical mafia uses to confuse us.

Medical authorities claim alternative healers can’t provide documentation. But Charlotte Gerson says otherwise. Case documents were stolen by a medical mafia mole from her father Max Gerons’s office before he died. She and her staff have offered documents from their Mexico clinic since then, but mainstream medicine refuses to accept them.

Canadian nurse Rene Caisse privy to using an American Indian herbal remedy that she named Essiac (Caisse reversed) Tea in her clinic as long as her patients were diagnosed by MDs before and after treatment. Her high cure rate was acknowledged by third party examining physicians. When nurse Caisse died, almost her documents were seized and burned.

Laetrile, derived from legally available apricot seeds’ amygdaline, is illegal despite its efficacy and safety. This is all because the Sloane-Kettering Institute in NYC said it didn’t work even though their research was positive.

Sloane-Kettering’s press spokesman, Dr. Ralph Moss, was so disgusted by the lies that he resigned and leaked the actual research papers to G. Edward Griffin, who then wrote World Without Cancer, explaining how laetrile does work well without side effects.

It is no surprise that shoppers have started reaching for so-called ‘green’ products, which they expect to contain significantly less amounts of these toxic substances thanks to tricky marketing practices. Many products even carry labels stating that the item is non-toxic, biodegradable, non-hazardous, non-flammable, and non-corrosive. Unfortunately, these same ‘green’ cleaning products sometimes contain 2-Butoxyethanol — a petrochemical solvent. Liver and kidney damage are but two of the symptoms that go along with chronic exposure to this toxin, and it may be lurking in your ‘green’ cleaning supplies.

Household cleaning products are not very highly-regulated by the government. In fact, cleaning product manufacturers are not required to disclose all of the ingredients used in the product on the label. Even companies who produce ‘green’ and ‘natural’ cleaners are not required to do so. This means that consumers checking the ingredients of the product to ensure it is safe for use in their home may be falsely led to believe that a product is safe when it most certainly is not. A number of unlabeled carcinogenic chemicals may be lurking in ‘green’ products without the consumer knowing. One such chemical, 2-butoxyethanol, was a chemical used in one of the controversial dispersants used for the BP oil spill — Corexit 9527A.

Used since the American Civil War, dental amalgams contain an estimated 50% mercury — which studies have found is leading to the toxic contamination of water, air, and soil. Fortunately, in the last 10 years nearly half of dentists have recognized this and have stopped using them in their practice. However, 50 percent of all US dentists still use them. The 50 percent that still use mercury-based fillings account for between 240-300 tons of mercury entering the market every year.

Consumers for Dental Choice report:

Once in the environment, dental mercury converts to its even more toxic form, methylmercury, and becomes a major source of mercury in the fish you eat. The cost of cleaning up this environmental hazard is high. According to studies, amalgam is “more expensive than most, possibly all, other fillings when including environmental costs.”

But the cost of not cleaning up dental mercury from our environment is even higher. The environmental health effects of amalgam are well known, and have recently been reiterated by the United States Environmental Protection Agency: brain damage and neurological problems, especially for children and the unborn babies of pregnant women.

With dental mercury uncontrollably entering the environment from multiple pathways, phasing out amalgam and transitioning to non-mercury alternatives is the only way to reduce – and eventually eliminate – this significant source of mercury that threatens our environment and ultimately our health.

Pregnant California women have been found to have high levels of a toxic flame retardant in their blood. The chemical, polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), was banned in in California in 2004. The study is set to be published in the Environmental Science and Technology journal.

The Los Angeles Times reports:

The UC San Francisco research team tested 25 second-trimester pregnant women from Northern and Central California seeking care in San Francisco in 2008 and 2009 and found they had high levels of the chemicals in their blood, putting their babies at risk, according to the study published in Wednesday’s Environmental Science and Technology journal.

Researchers believe the women’s high PBDE levels were due to California’s strict flammability regulations enacted in the 1970s, which led manufacturers to add flame retardants to a wide variety of products, from electronics to furniture.

PBDEs may be toxic to the liver, thyroid and nerve development, according to the EPA.

We spoke with Ami Zota, a postdoctoral fellow at UCSF’s Program on Reproductive Health and the Environment and lead author of the study, about what the findings mean and what can be done.
