If you’re looking to break through weight loss plateaus, then opting for a glycemic index diet is the way to go. Also known as G.I. diet, this diet is simple and straightforward, no need to count calories or remove entire food groups from your kitchen; all you need is a working knowledge of this diet and a little bit of consistent practice. After that, you can utilize the technique to lose the extra pounds and keep them off for good.

Without further ado, here are some glycemic index diet practical tips and information:

What is the Glycemic Index?

The glycemic index is a tool that helps you measure how the different types of food affect blood sugar levels. Foods are ranked from 1 to 100 on the glycemic index. The higher the ranking, the higher your blood sugar levels will be after consuming such foods. And elevated blood sugar levels are a sign of trouble, leading to mood swings, overeating, weight gain and a myriad of other health troubles such diabetes and obesity.

Therefore, a G.I. diet is based on opting for foods ranking low on the glycemic index and steering clear away from higher ranking food items. With the G.I. nutritional regimentation, expect to lose more weight, have more energy, improve your body to fat ratio, and boost your overall health and well-being levels.

Foods with higher rankings

Any food ranking above 70 on the glycemic index is a deal-breaker. These types of foods are usually full with sugar and chemicals and easily absorbed by the body, thus leading to hunger pangs and overeating.

Examples include white bread, white rice, potatoes, some fruits, watermelon, processed foods or any other food that may raise your blood sugar levels. The more processed the food, the more likely it’ll lead to a blood sugar spike.

Eat Foods with lower rankings

On the other hand, most of the foods ranking below 70 are a good deal. For better weight loss result, opt for food ranking below 55. These types of foods are usually slowly absorbed by the body, thus leading to more balanced blood sugar levels.

Some of the main sources of low-glycemic foods are: vegetables (the more colors, the better), legumes, peanuts, raw apples, peas, lentils, and skim milk.

The problem? Many people do not have the knowledge to build an effective yet healthful diet, ensuring that their goals are met and retained. There are many diets out there that warp your metabolism and destroy your body, resulting in a few pounds lost at the cost of your body’s ability to burn more fat in the future. Only after discovering nutrition basics will you experience being healthy while keeping the results.

How to be Healthy: Counting Calories

It is understood that calories will determine whether or not your body has “excess” based upon your metabolic maintenance level, but where the calories are coming from is of utmost importance. 2500 calories from brownies and cupcakes is far different than 2500 calories from a variety of healthful food sources. Plenty of extremely lean individuals never count calories, and they never have to. What’s more important for being healthy is eating the right foods – quality over quantity.

Instead of setting your fixed amount of calories at 2500 and eating whatever you want until that point, most likely not getting enough nutrients in the process, simply eat the right foods. Try and be creative with your diet, tampering with different combinations of great foods. In order to start your new way of eating off the right way, start purchasing and cooking by these guidelines:

Nutrition Basics | Simple Ways to be Healthy

Eat preferably organic – I understand some people can not afford to purchase all organic food, but even consuming just some organic food will help you in being healthy thanks to the added health benefits. While there has been a large-scale proliferation of pseudo nutritional science on the matter, such as the press claiming it’s essentially the same as non-organic food, the studies clearly show eating organic is much healthier than conventional. If it is truly 100% organic then it will not contain harmful ingredients like mercury-containing high fructose corn syrup, or be genetically engineered (GMO). In this day and age, eating organic is one of the first nutrition basics.

Take a multivitamin or wholefood supplement: Since soil is lacking nutrients from modern-day farming practices, foods are undergoing a major depletion of vitamins and minerals. It requires almost 5x as much food today to receive the same nutrition received a few decades ago. Thankfully, multivitamins and whole food supplements are great boosts for being healthy and maintaining daily vitamin requirements. Unfortunately, the recommended daily value as directed by the medical establishment is created with a focus of what one needs minimally simply to survive. A multivitamin or whole food supplement that contains high amounts of the natural forms of the vitamins, instead of synthetic vitamins (made in a lab), are also higher quality.

Diversify your intake - Just like working out, your body responds to change. Varying food intake is one of many ways to be healthy. If your daily intake consists of mainly carbohydrates and you’re not getting the results you’d like, try consuming more protein, or healthful fats. When advising someone on sculpting their diet, it’s always an important factor for me to find out what works for them, because what works for one person may not work for another.

Avoid toxic additives – Another principle resting with the other nutrition basics, avoid food additives such as monosodium glutamate and aspartame, which have been linked to weight gain, brain damage, kidney problems, and increased cancer rates. Even more dangerous is the fact that a lot of food today is genetically modified (GMO food). GMO food could very well be tampering with the very genetic coding of our bodies. Avoiding these toxic additives is extremely important when it comes to being healthy. Buy organic and read labels to avoid these toxic additives.

Being Healthy Automatically | When to eat, when to stop eating, and what to eat

Your body has an amazing way of telling you when you’re done eating. In fact, knowing when you’re supposed to stop eating is one of the many ways to be healthy which has been used for thousands of years. The trick is to eat slowly, around 20 or so minutes per meal, and your body will tell you when you’re full. Be sure to distinguish whether or not you’re hungry, or you just want something that tastes good. If you’re craving sugar all the time, there could be a nutritional deficiency present. Listening to your body is part of the nutrition basics as well as any other ‘basics’ of life.

Just as your body can tell you when to stop eating, it can also tell you when to eat and what to eat. Of course, you eat when you’re hungry, but the key is to break your meals up into 4-6 meals a day. When you eat 4-6 small meals a day, instead of 3 large ones, you allow your metabolism to properly process the food it is given. Seeing how your body responds to certain foods is the easiest way to find out whether or it is approving what you eat. Listen to your body, and experiment with a bunch of different foods.

Change Your Life, Not Your Diet

This is not a diet, this is a significant change in your life for the better. Being healthy is not a difficult place to reach, but in order to feel better, look better, and think clearer, you need a strong nutritional base. If beginning your quest to be healthy starting from the ground up, it will be an enjoyable process to change your life for the better with food. Stop counting calories and hopping on the latest fad diets, and make a real change through implementing these techniques into your daily life. While there are nutrition basics to know, you should learn how the way think is the cornerstone of reaching your health goals.

To most people, the concept of eating to lose weight is a bit ridiculous, but strangely enough, it is indeed true that it can be done. Simply consuming foods like fruit and vegetables could result in painless weight loss. Since fruit and vegetables are low in calories and high in volume, they are excellent sources of food. Not only will the fruit and vegetables help you to lose weight, but they are full of vitamins and nutrients as well. Why wait to take advantage of this information when achieving weight loss could be as simple as eating vegetables that burn calories or fruit that burn calories?

Below is a list of 19 vegetables that burn calories and fat instantly simply by eating them, aiding you in your weight loss mission.

19 Vegetables that Burn Calories

Asparagus

Fennel

Gourd

Broccoli

Leek

Cabbage

Lettuce

Carrots

Marrow

Cauliflower

Peppers

CeleryRadishes

Chicory

Spinach

Cress

Tomatoes

Cucumbers

Turnips

Onions

Even if you are looking to eat these vegetables solely for the purpose of losing weight, you will be pleased to find out that your overall health boosts as well. Vegetables are full of vitamins and nutrients like vitamins A, C, E, K, carotene, carotenoids, and much more – depending on the vegetable. Consuming many of these vegetables will effectively make for better quality hair, skin, and nails, while boosting the immune system as well.

Another important result of consuming more fruit and vegetables is the decrease in junk food consumption. While making the change to fruit and veggies, even if only for weight loss, you will ultimately end up consuming less of those foods contributing to weight gain and disease. Many foods today are loaded with sugar and full of harmful ingredients like food coloring, high-fructose corn syrup, and hydrolyzed oils, to name a few. Omitting these more of these health-damaging foods from your diet will result in a profound positive effect on health.

What do you and your family eat each week? You may be shocked to see the significant variation even between relatively ‘similar’ nations when it comes to diet. While many families within the United States and Mexico include fast food and soda into the core of their nutritional program, families from nations like Bhutan survive off of traditional base food items like vegetables and grains. It is easy to see why disease rates are skyrocketing in many developed countries, where nutrition is not held to a very high regard. There is a huge difference in what the world eats, referring to different nations across the globe.

Amazingly, the United States also spends more on healthcare than any nation in the world. Despite spending $7,960 per capita, the United States has been ranked dead last when it comes to the quality of care. The fact of the matter is that when food intake is ignored — along with the subsequent toxic ingredients that go along with the processed food addiction — disease will arise. In the telling pictures below, taken from the book ‘Hungry Planet: What the World Eats’, you can see what the average family from each nation eats over the period of one week.

What the World Eats

North Carolina, United States

Possibly the least surprising photo showing what the world eats, this family from North Carolina eats a diet almost entirely of processed and pre-prepared foods with heavy amounts of junk and fast food. Consuming mostly sugar-laden ‘fruit’ drinks and mega-sized sodas from Burger King and McDonald’s, this average American diet will ultimately lead to chronic disease and rampant sickness. Some favorite foods include pizza and fast food.

Mexico

Families in mexico also tend to consume sugary sodas and processed foods, though their fruit and vegetable intake is higher than the United States families observed. The family lists their favorite food items as pizza, pasta, and chicken.

Canada

Enjoying some of the same processed items as families from Mexico and the United States, Canadian families do consume processed chips and meats, though you will notice a more prominent display of vegetables and fresh fish on the table. An increased amount of yogurt and cheese is also featured.

Italy

Italian families enjoy their bread, pasta, and assorted fruit. With grains a major part of the diet, along with other carbohydrate-rich foods, Italian families tend to forfeit some meal options high in protein for ‘traditional’ Italian dishes like pasta with ragu. While many of these items are fresh or even baked at home, Italian families still consume large amounts of sodas like Pepsi. You can see that this family drinks about 6 larger-sized bottles per week.

China

Here is a photo of what the world eats with a focus on China. This Chinese family prefers fried shredded pork with sweet and sour sauce, listed as their favorite dishes. Eating processed food items mixed with packaged meats and fish, this Chinese family eats more fruit than vegetables, and their produce selection is one of the smallest besides the United States.

Chad

This family resides in the developing nation of Chad and spends only the equivalent of $1.23 per week on food to feed the entire family. Their favorite food is soup with fresh sheep meat.

Japan

It may surprise you, but this Japanese family consumes a diet high in processed junk and sugary treats. They list their favorite food items as cake, potato chips, and sashimi.

Germany

This German family has adopted an American-styled nutritional regiment, stating that their favorite foods are pizza, vanilla pudding, fried potatoes, and fried noodles. You may also notice the largely increased amount of beer and other alcoholic drinks over the other nations.

Great Britain

Spending over $250 per week on food, the average family in Great Britain is eating mostly processed meals and candy. This family’s preferred foods include chocolate fudge cake, mayonnaise sandwiches, and prawn cocktail.

While of course a single picture of each nation can’t show you what the respective nation eats and ultimately what the world eats, it does provide insight and discussion for those who are interested in learning about cultures around the world.

It is no secret that the average American diet is completely in the slumps. Consuming packaged foods, fast food, artificially enhanced products, and especially low quality cheap food is the norm, but is it any wonder that being overweight while also falling victim to a host of illnesses is also the norm. Being raised in this era of poor health makes it difficult to know what is truly healthful and unhealthful. Food has drastically changed since decades ago, and so parents often aren’t aware of the severe decline in food quality. Fast food in particular is one of the primary reasons for the drastic health decline seen today.

Why You Should Avoid Fast Food at All Costs

If you haven’t already, take a couple of hours to watch the films Super Size Me or Fast Food Nation. After watching these films, you can see first hand how fast food causes severe damage to your body – even if you don’t consume it for every meal of every day like in one of the films. Fast food is nothing but a concoction of harmful and health-damaging chemicals which can easily be understood if you were to think for a moment how any restaurant could offer a double cheeseburger for only $1.

Most recently it was uncovered that these $1 cheeseburgers, along with the rest of McDonald’s’ beef and chicken, were actually harnessing ‘pink slime’ scrap meat covered with ammonium hydroxide. Not only does this fake meat provide no nutritional value at all, but it is chemically contaminated from ammonia, the toxic cleaning agent found under the sink. The meat is actually fat trimmings and connective tissue that are separated from the bone – scrap meat that is not fit for human consumption. The ammonia treatment is in response to the danger of contamination from salmonella or E. coli, but the scrap meats themselves are more likely to contain pathogens. Despite the chemical treatment, the meat is still in the line of fire for contamination.

Additionally, McDonald’s McNuggets contain 7 different ingredients making up the ‘meat’, many of which contain sub-ingredients. Instead of using real meat, the ingredient list utilizes sodium phosphate, safflower oil, wheat starch, dextrose, and autolyzed yeast extract – a particularly dangerous substance very similar to the toxic MSG. Along side with these ingredients comes the use of dimethylpolysiloxane, a silicon substance used as an anti-foaming agent and often found in breast implants and silly putty.

Of course the use of these ingredients is not limited only to McDonald’s. In fact, all of the fast food restaurants are guilty of using them. The worst part? They are aware of the destructive nature behind these ingredients, but truly couldn’t care any less. The truth behind such a statement can be exemplified by Taco Bell’s attempt to create a drive-thru diet where individuals would supposed to lose weight by eating fast food. It was only a few years ago when Taco Bell announced the “Drive-Thru Diet”, where they showcased their foods low in fat. But what they don’t tell you is that even if their food has 9 grams of fat, it is still made up of numerous ingredients contributing to the global health decline.

While the reasons for the influx of fast food consumption are many, one primary one is the usage of psychological advertising. Being one of the most powerful tools to reach both the conscious and subconscious, advertising plays a huge role in how society is ran today, and that includes which foods we eat. What’s more, children are much more influenced by what they see and hear, and research proves it. A study conduced late in 2011 showed that 71 percent of children will choose junk food like french fries over apple slices when given coupons for each of them. The number dropped only to 55 percent when parents encouraged children to choose the apple slices. But the desired reach does not stop at direct advertising and influence.

Reminder: Don’t forget to like us on Facebook to be the first in the know!

A new children’s educational book has recently been launched by the Council for Biotechnology Information, educating young children on the ‘numerous benefits’ of genetically modified food. Of course genetically modified food has time and time again been shown to cause human and environmental harm, but still the attempt to brainwash young children is carelessly made. The advertising for such food is also heavily tied in with fast food, as virtually all fast food is constructed with genetically modified food and ingredients.

These are but only a few of the countless reasons to never ingest fast food.
Although these children are noticed and targeted first — undoubtedly for their less mature behavior, the increase in prescriptions for ADHD medications over the years shows that the psychiatric and pharmaceutical industry are continually lessening the conditions upon which a child can be diagnosed with ADHD.

Younger Children Targeted for ADHD Diagnosis

In British Columbia, the cutoff date for entering school in any year is December 31st, making children born in January the oldest in their grade and children born in December the youngest. Researchers looked at approximately 1 million children ages 6-12 diagnosed with ADHD and found that those born in December were 39 percent more likely to be labeled as having ADHD and 48 percent more likely to be treated with ADHD medication than those born in January.

“Our study suggests younger, less mature children are inappropriately being labeled and treated…it is important not to expose children to potential harms from unnecessary diagnosis and use of medications.”, study researcher Richard Morrow, of the University of British Columbia, said.

As rates of ADHD escalate each year, more and more children are stricken by not the ‘disorder’, but the medication that is prescribed to fix it. ADHD has become one of the most commonly diagnosed childhood disorders today, with an average of 9 percent of children between the ages of 5 and 17 being diagnosed with the disease each year. Over 18 million prescriptions were written for Adderall in 2010, up 13.4 percent from 2009. The massive increase has actually led to ADHD medication shortages, where pharmaceutical companies are actually struggling to acquire enough of the active ingredient used in the drugs to ‘treat’ the ADHD label.

Children are prescribed these behavior altering drugs, which alter their brain chemistry and lead to more serious problems like depression and drug dependencies later in life. Pharmaceuticals are only a temporary fix that do not address the fundamental issues behind ADHD, or any disorder for that matter. The lack of necessity regarding these pharmaceuticals has even sparked outcry against antipsychotics by mainstream health officials.

Aside from an epidemic of misdiagnoses, an improper diet has everything to do with children expressing what would be viewed as ADHD-like behavior. For parents with children labeled with ADHD, try the simple test of helping to alter your child’s diet.

Engaging in unhealthy activities have an obvious negative impact on your physical health, but did you ever consider how these activities are impacting your emotional health? Activities leading to poor health like drinking alcohol and smoking regularly have been shown to also greatly contribute to a lower level of overall happiness. Taking this aspect into consideration offers an even greater reason to establish an overall healthy lifestyle.

Unhealthy Diet Leads to an Overall Lower Quality of Life

Authors of the study coming to this finding used data from Understanding Society — a long-term study of 40,000 UK households. Researchers analyzed the life at home and the health-related behavior of close to 5000 kids ages 10 to 15. The nearly 5000 kids were questioned on family friends, appearance, and various other factors including their overall happiness levels. What they found was that teenagers who never or seldom engaged in drinking alcohol were between four and six times more likely to be happier than those those who do drink. Similarly, teens who refuse cigarettes are nearly five times more happy than their smoking counterparts.

To add to the findings, the authors also found that higher consumption of healthy foods such as fruits and vegetables and less ingestion of junk food was associated with a higher happiness level.

Unfortunately for virtually the entire adolescent population, psychological food advertisements are an indirect reason for the decreased happiness level. Researchers have found parental disapproval of junk food only resulted in 13 percent less children choosing junk food, which is oftentimes full of synthetic chemicals and genetically modified ingredients. These advertisements are also contributing to the severe lack of nutritious food intake, with only 10 percent of high school students consuming the appropriate amount of fruits and vegetables.

The processed junk foods which are contributing to a lack of happiness have also been shown to trigger addiction and brain damage. In fact, research finds that processed foods and sugary drinks are addictive as cocaine.

“Another explanation could be that youths who smoke and drink first fit themselves into certain groups that tend to be unhappier, and then they find themselves unhappy. It becomes a vicious cycle…It’s probably a combination of both [turning to these activities and fitting in with groups first]. Some will take up smoking because they want to feel more adult, but then find themselves hanging out with people who are less happy and then they become less happy”, co-author Cara Booker says.

Advertising plays a large part in the high rate of smokers as well, with the subconscious and conscious mind constantly being bombarded with smoking scenes in movies and TV. Unfortunately when children choose to take such a glorified role in society as suggested by film, they are also subjecting themselves to not only the dangers of smoking, but the unhappy life that often comes with it as well.

If you were to harness the potential of this energy transmitter in your head, then great feats could be reached far beyond what can currently be conceived. Scientists have already proven that your thoughts are powerful determining factors in your overall health, and that your mindset can ultimately create — or delay — self-healing. Whether it be thinking your way to wellness, or simply coming to a realization that you are fully capable of being healthy, the road to such successes is not a difficult one to travel. In fact, even the key to powerful fat loss can also be found in the way you think.

Changing the Way You Think is Fundamental in Attaining Great Health

Attaining superb health does not start with diet or exercise, but rather a mere thought. Consciously noticing how you think and what patterns are embedded in your mind is the absolute first and most fundamental step in reaching a 10 on the health scale. Having been exposed to 10′s of thousands of food advertisements while growing up as a child, it is easy to see how easily the mind, conscious, and subconscious can be affected. The fact of the matter is that living an unhealthy lifestyle and eating unhealthy foods is quite standard thanks to this marketing assault by the food industry.

After being subject to the advertisements, negative influences, identity issues, and consistent doubts about the strength of your willpower for so long, anyone’s way of thinking would be deeply altered. To already healthy-thinking individuals and those who have endured the hardships while reaching for that state of healthy-thinking, living a healthy lifestyle is not only done with the utmost simplicity, but they love it. As for individuals who grew up around unhealthy-thinkers, trying to be healthy is a prodigious challenge.

If you are struggling to accelerate your quest to optimum health, then you can be sure that a change in thinking is the first step to fulfilling this mission. Altering diet or engaging in exercise can improve your health dramatically, but the improvement will not be everlasting if you’re struggling to keep the momentum. You need to ask yourself: do I want this, or do I want to want this? In other words, you need to ensure you really want to embark on the necessary path to health revolution, ultimately experiencing the beneficial end result of the health transformation. Truly wanting great health will result in all of the activity leading to your goal being enjoyable, while only longing for the end result leaves you feeling with a sense of struggle.

To truly desire great health, try visualizing what your life and body would be like once you have it. Think about how you would look and feel after having achieved your short-term goal, and then think about it again after having achieved a long-term goal. Want to kick it up and notch and really amplify progress? Imagine you are incredibly healthy and have the perfect body in the present. Feel the feelings that would be running through you if you had exactly what you wanted right now. By visualizing and imagining you have the health you want right now on a daily basis, you are training yourself to achieve that goal consciously and subconsciously.

If you want things in your life to change, you have to actually change things in your life. Change starts with a single thought which leads to a single life-changing decision.

It is also known that living a healthy lifestyle and eating healthful foods is extremely important during pregnancy, but how significant is diet and lifestyle after the baby is born? The significance of what mothers ingest while breastfeeding may be clearly revealed by breast feeding expert Dr. Ruth Lawrence, who says drinking caffeinated beverages may be the reason babies can’t sleep.

Substances Consumed by Mother Appear in Breast Milk

Mother’s milk contains small amounts of whatever is ingested by the mother. Drinking coffee, tea, soft drinks, or even chocolate increases the level of the stimulant in the blood. When babies drink the milk, they may become restless, awake, or irritable due to difficulties with breaking the chemical down and removing it from their bodies. Although the ‘safe’ amount of caffeine consumed is not necessarily agreed upon, Lawrence recommends no more than 300mg, or 3 cups, daily.

“Usually a mother, particularly if she is breastfeeding, is cautioned to limit her caffeine intake,” she told the Journal of Caffeine Research. “Unfortunately a lot of things about breastfeeding are based on opinion, and I do not know that the ‘safe’ amount of caffeine for daily use has been carefully measured.”

While passing down stimulants like caffeine in breast milk is an issue, unfortunately there are larger threats which should be recognized.

Found to be present in over a third of 55 popular brand-name food and beverage products, research has shown that those consuming processed foods and many beverages are also consuming mercury. Similarly, another heavy metal, arsenic, resides in many apple juice brands, grape juice, and products containing organic brown rice syrup. Breastfeeding mothers consuming these foods and beverages are risking their new-born also ingesting these toxic substances. The negative effects, however, are much greater.

It is important for mother’s to recognize that being health-conscious is important both during pregnancy and following pregnancy. By consuming processed foods, tap water, alcohol, or any other substance, new mothers are also risking these substances coming out in their breast milk.
