Mayor Gavin Newsom has announced that he will veto San Francisco’s ban on Mcdonald’s toy-containing Happy Meals. The news comes after city’s Board of Supervisors unanimously voted to ban the Happy Meal, deciding that toys cannot be included with meals that include excess calories, sodium and fat.

Mcdonald’s has voiced opposition against the law, claiming that it is not what their customers want.

“As previously stated, we are extremely disappointed with this decision. It’s not what our customers want, nor is it something they asked for,” said McDonald’s spokeswoman Danya Proud after the board’s vote.

The law had passed after a long legal stalemate, with Newsom threatening a veto since its conception. Newsom claims that it is a role of government that he is not willing to support.

I don’t think you can regulate how people market products without going down a dangerous path, Newsom said. This is a whole another role of government I am not supporting.”

The mayor plans to present a new plan to “combat child obesity” on Friday at Fairmount Elementary School.
