After a long legal stalemate, San Francisco has banned happy meal toys. It has been under consideration for quite some time, but lawmakers finally approved legislation that would disallow the addition of toys in meals that include excess calories, sodium and fat, as it unfairly markets to children.

The city’s Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to ban the kid-friendly combo, saying that they hope it will help combat childhood obesity as a whole. With the new law, McDonald’s will either have to stop selling their unhealthy meals with toys, or will have to improve the macro-nutrient content.

The nutritional makeup of a Happy Meal is not all that is concerning, however. McDonald’s chicken nuggets have been found to contain an anti-foaming agent that is used in the creation of silly putty known as dimethylpolysiloxane. Similarly, a McDonald’s hamburger sat for over a year without showing blatant signs of decay.

In response, McDonald’s says that the ruling restricts business, and limits the ability for parents to make decisions for their children. Only time will tell if this ruling sets off a legal fissure, with states nationwide – and perhaps even cities worldwide – banning the Happy Meal.
