Looking for an alternative to toothpastes loaded with sulfates and other toxic ingredients such as fluoride? Mainstream science has now fully recognized the ‘miracle’ powers of coconut oil to not only combat tooth decay and drastically improve overall mouth health, but also to specifically crush a yeast known as candida albicans that can lead to deadly infections. This ‘news’ likely comes as nothing more than further confirmation for many, as natural health practicioners have been recommending coconut oil for years.

The research comes from the Athlone Institute of Technology, where Ireland-based scientists examined the effects of natural and digested coconut oil on common strains of bacteria within the mouth. What they found was that not only did the coconut oil effectively inhibit a majority of the bacteria strains single-handedly, but it was also particularly harmful to candida albicans. This is important when considering the fact that an excessive amount of the yeast known as candida albicans can be brought upon by a poor diet consisting of processed foods and sugar.

Candida infection, also known as candida overgrowth or the ‘candy disease’, can be associated with symptoms like chronic tiredness, recurring yeast infections, and digestive issues. It can also lead to a mouth infection known as thrush — a condition typically ‘treated’ using anti-fungal medications preceeded by an x-ray of your esophagus. Now, researchers are highlighting how coconut oil intake can be an alternative solution with far fewer side effects and concerns.

In their report, the scientists state that coconut oil could be ‘an effective alternative to chemical additives’ in most dental hygiene products. This refers to the many sulfate chemicals linked to numerous conditions, added fluoride, and many others.

It is important to ensure that you purchase the right kind of high quality coconut oil when purchasing it online or from your local supermarket. An important consideration is that the scientists conducting the study may have actually used an inferior low quality coconut oil, meaning that the results may have actually been even more positive if they were to use a 100% organic, extra virgin source. As a general rule of thumb, just as with vitamins and other supplements, avoid purchasing a generic brand of non-organic coconut oil from your local chain supermarket.

Instead, look for a USDA certified organic or 100% organic label that is unrefined and cold-pressed. Personally, I would recommend Nutiva’s coconut oil on Vitacost for a high quality source that isn’t going to be highly expensive (I have no ties to either company).  As a side note, coconut oil is also great to store as a preparedness food as it has a very long shelf life and is packed full of nutrients.

You people will believe anything you read. Lets say the distribution of this webpage reaches 50 million people worldwide and I already know that coconut stocks are down, i buy some stocks in coconut as they are low, release a favorable web article about the use of coconut oils, convince gullible people by making everything look official and suddenly in the months to come coconut stock goes up, i sell my stock, make a profit and you idiots are none the wiser but are happily brushing your teeth with coconut oils. My words are final.

***MISLEADING*** “They found that ENZYME-MODIFIED coconut oil strongly inhibited the growth of most strains of Streptococcus bacteria including Streptococcus mutans – an acid-producing bacterium that is a major cause of tooth decay.” Do not confuse this with regular coconut oil!! Enzyme-Modified meaning “digested” or artificially so.

To make a great toothpaste mix coconut oil and baking soda into a paste. Add essential oil (I like peppermint) + a bit of salt/and/or stevia to balance saltiness and presto! You’ve now got a terrific toothpaste that’ll leave your teeth feeling cleaner than a visit to the dentist!

    • Jeannie Williams

This looks like a great toothpaste do you have any other recipes for coconut?

Great site and a lot of informations, thank you!. So how to use coconut oil to treat Candida infection? .

  • jj

Coconut oil has been used in many ways for so many years. Try shallow frying potato, sweet potato, carrots, whatever vegetables you like.. yummm this is so good for you and the taste is fantastic. I recently treated my very young pup with coconut oil to improve skin condition. He had a bath with 1 teaspoon added to the water, orally given 1 teaspoon morning and night, even the vet has commented on how fantastic he is looking. Only use organic coconut oil. I myself eat 1/2 teaspoon morning and night use it as my daily moisturizer and feel great for it. Interesting as winter/cool the oil becomes quite firm and summer the oil becomes very liquid. Great stuff.

To use orally, swish a t or T in the mouth and hold it as long as possible using the tongue to work it between the teeth and into the gums. Excellent for helping heal infections. Use after flossing teeth. Also used to treat head lice, lightly coat the head and hair with the oil, wrap head and leave on overnight or longer. The oil suffocates the lice, needs to be repeated about twice at make sure the nits are killed as some may "hatch" out.

Look up Bruce Fife, N D. His book Coconut Cures is a wonderful resource and explains the benefits of the oil. I use it for cooking, making my own lip balm with bees wax, for my face and body, eat it for energy and heart health as well as to heal body inflamation. The oil is a liquid at around 78 degrees on your countertop and can be used as a liquid veg oil. If it solidifies warm it slightly. Too many health benefits to name here; however when men found out how to make soy bean and other veg oils, the industry vilified coconut oil for their own benefit and convinced the public coconut oil was unhealthy. Now the truth is told, coconut oil has always been a healthy oil in its organic, pure extra virgin state. Aurveydic medicine has used it for over 4000 years. Eat raw coconut and use coconut milk also—great stuff.

  • aman

I have come across many articles highlighting the importance of coconut oil, but have not found ways to use it, except as a moisturizer for skin. Would really appreciate if some one could tell how to use it.

There is a lot of ways to use it! Coconut oil is great for cooking and has so many good benefits. One of them is to help you to reduce cholesterol and also loose weight.

      • Lee Schelin

I belong to two Heart related eGroups with 1500 members each and I'm trying to increase my cholesterol and everyone tells me to use Coconut Oil to do it. Why would anyone want to lower their cholesterol when it's beneficial to our brains?

      • Alicia

Yes, my Total Cholesterol dropped 12 pts and my Triglycerides dropped 18 pts in just 2 months of cooking with Coconut oil!!

    • Anonymous

Hi Aman – there are several blogs on coconut oil. Tropical Traditions – a purveyor of many coconut products – has several recipes. Also, if you simply do a StartPage search for "coconut oil+tooth decay" (or whatever you need it to do), you will find many links. :)

  • Brad

Lots of great info here except one crucial piece is missing. How do we apply or use it orally to maximize effectiveness?

    • Annelie

Brad, you can try 'Oil Pulling' (just google it) with coconut oil or you can make your own 'toothpaste' by combining 2 tbsp. of melted coconut oil with 3 tbsp. of baking soda. Brush your teeth and your tongue with this. Don't spit the oil down your sink as it hardens when cold and can cause blockages. Spit into a paper towel and discard in the dustbin.

      • PIstol Pete

Baking soda and coconut oil are both good for you… don't spit, swallow.

      • Solipse

Why not using green or white powdered clay instead of baking soda. Baking soda makes teeth whiter but can be excessively aggressive against enamel. Also you can add xylitol which power raising pH and stabilising flora has been proved.
